Join the NNL team as a General Maintenance Helper at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory!
The General Laborer 2 assists maintenance employees in the installation, repair, maintenance, and construction of laboratory machinery, equipment and buildings. Perform sampling of materials and substrates to characterize materials for radiological, environmental and industrial hygiene controls. Perform remediation of areas for the purposes of supporting facility and infrastructure work. Handle, package, and transport materials containing hazardous materials, asbestos, radioactive materials and other materials of other environmental concerns. Perform painting of equipment, vehicles, machinery and exterior or interior surfaces of buildings, using brush, pad, spray, or roller. Determine appropriate material for coating needed, measure areas to be covered and estimate quantities required, and prepare surfaces for coating. Qualify as an Asbestos Worker and perform the duties of a RAM Transporter. Responding to trouble calls related to immediate issues to help maintain continuity of operations. Identify and develop improvements to existing facilities or methods of operation.?
- Determine material requirements and select appropriate materials to perform a job.? Maintain and organize material / waste storage areas.
- Receive oral and written instructions from supervisors, managers, or higher classified maintenance personnel.
- Ability to operate powered hand tools and equipment in order to perform non-technical work.
- Assist carpenters, electricians, plumbers, sheet metal workers, pipe fitters, machine repair personnel and other maintenance employees, to handle environmental and radiological waste aspects.
- Perform environmental and radiological sampling and remediation work as directed.
- Perform, package and transport environmental, asbestos, PCB, hazardous, chemical samples, radioactive, and mixed waste per established requirements.
- Maintain qualifications as a C-RAM/RAM Transporter and mixed waste / generator transporter (MWGT) to support radiological work performed by other craft personnel.
- Perform inspections of asbestos, PCB, hazardous, radioactive, and mixed waste areas as required
- Maintain environmental and radiological work and storage areas per Federal, State, and Bettis regulations.
- Check surfaces to be painted for damage such as cracks, penetrations or loose putty and caulking.
- Repair surface damage to obtain a smooth and airtight surface by methods such as patching and caulking.
- Prep surfaces for coating by methods such as acid or alkali chemical cleaning, solvent washing, grinding, scarifying, sandblasting, high pressure water blasting, scraping, sanding, wire brushing or vacuuming.
- Reduce paints to proper consistency by mixing in thinning agents per manufacturer's instructions. Assemble, disassemble, and clean paint spray apparatus. Clean brushes, tools and equipment such as sign reproducing equipment and color dispenser machinery.
- Set up and operate sign reproducing and stencil equipment. Lay out lettering and symbols for signs.
- Recommend and assist in the specification of materials needed to replenish on-hand parts and materials, and parts and materials needed to complete job assignments.
- Install new or replacement material as required by engineering changes or as deemed appropriate as skill of the craft.?
Required Combination Of Knowledge And Skill
High school or vocational school graduate or the equivalent with the ability to read, write and perform general mathematics of the variety usually learned in a high school or vocational school course.
Possess current qualification or ability to obtain and maintain a contamination worker qualification and RAM Transporter in accordance with established Naval Reactors Program criteria within six months or as agreed upon by management through the established training plan upon assignment. Personnel who are unwilling to maintain or obtain the required qualifications will be removed to the next lower qualified position. ?
Must pass a periodic physical examination.?

Pay Range
$22.38 hourly
Jobs categorized as subject to a collective bargaining agreement will adhere to the pay rates, wage increases, progression schedules, and other parameters identified and negotiated in said agreements. Wages and other compensation details are subject to change based negotiated changes to the collective bargaining agreements.
