The Fusion and Fission Energy Sciences Directorate (FFESD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team as a Project Manager. The FFESD team addresses compelling challenges in fission and fusion energy systems, enabling ORNL to pursue national priorities in fusion energy and current and advanced nuclear research, development, and deployment. This is a unique opportunity to be part of executing projects that will enable next generation nuclear energy, both fusion and fission. As the Project Manager, you will play a crucial role in overseeing all aspects of project execution and ensuring successful completion of projects such as building out labs to support fundamental nuclear science, leading construction of fusion blanket test facilities, or updating labs to test materials for fusion or fission applications.
Main Duties / Responsibilities:
- Oversee all aspects of project execution, including design, procurement, construction & commissioning, quality assurance, nuclear safety, and ES&H, in coordination with the Cost Account Managers and Project Controls staff.
- Establish clear expectations and communications with key project contributors and vendors.
- Assess emerging issues that could impact project performance and develop strategies and solutions to mitigate and manage them.
- Work closely with project leaders and managers to ensure effective strategies are implemented and resources are aligned with project goals.
- Create and nurture a succession plan to guarantee a highly skilled project management, technical, and support staff.
- Foster strong teams through collaboration across ORNL and accessing external expertise when necessary.
- Ensure safety and environmental compliance, as well as achieve ESH and QA goals.
- Serve as a member of project committees, including the Change Control Board and the Integrated Project Team.
- Lead the project team to earn high assessments in DOE/SC Office of Project Assessment reviews and complete annual Notable Outcome deliverables.
- Lead by example, promoting ORNL's "Research Code of Conduct" and fostering a respectful workplace.
Basic Qualifications:
- BS degree in a science or engineering field with at least 12 years of experience managing important technical programs or projects.
- Knowledge of DOE project management guidelines.
- Demonstrated ability to lead project reviews and advisory committees.
- Distinguished record of achievement and recognition.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced technical degree (MS or PhD) in a science or engineering field with at least 8 years of experience managing important technical programs or projects.
- Proven successful management of large, complex scientific/technical projects.
- Certification in project management (PMP) with at least 10 years of experience.
- Proven ability to work productively with highly skilled scientists, engineers, and project management professionals.
- Minimum of 5 years managing large DOE capital projects (DOE 413.3B), especially DOE Office of Science projects.
- Experience with alternate contracting vehicles and selection methods and processes.
- Experience with contamination control procedures supporting high-purity environments, such as cleanrooms, pharmaceutical operations, and other sensitive processes.

- Visa sponsorship is not available.
- Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
