What You'll Do
Performs analytical tasks for nuclear materials (NMs) based on the graded safeguards concept to ensure materials are accounted for, unauthorized acts are detected, and NM transactions, material balances, and inventories are accurately recorded. Uses knowledge of NM forms, characteristics, and associated Production products and processes to provide assurance the inventory has been properly evaluated and reconciled. Provides and maintains a sufficient audit trail in accordance with DOE Orders and Y-12's Materials Control and Accountability (NMC&A) program.
Conducts detailed, complex evaluations of NM item and process monitoring data. Assists Production personnel with item monitoring reconciliation. Reviews process monitoring reports and performs investigations that are unique in nature and require original solutions; determines root causes of flags and ensures sufficient resolution. Identifies trends, new processes to be monitored, and efficiency improvements. Maintains the item and process monitoring manuals and databases. Integrates Work Request knowledge into process monitoring tracking and investigations. Assists in the management of the unmeasured items list each inventory period. Participates in the Propagation of Variance (POV) Board discussions, evaluating inventory differences (IDs), uncertainties, and limits. Duties include regular interface with other NMC&A functions, Production and Systems personnel, measurement teams, and management. Utilizes knowledge and skillsets from NMC&A experience to coordinate with various parties to create plans in advance for item and process monitoring and inventory reconciliation in future processing, identify potential issues, and coordinate resolutions to reduce impacts on operations at start-up.
Requires significant time spent in Production areas performing item and process monitoring evaluations and developing experiments to support theories and assumptions. May be required to assist in special inventories if evaluations do not resolve out-of-alarm IDs and process differences (PDs). Evaluates new and existing processes to determine the most effective methods of tracking and accounting for NM. Develops tools and specifications for ad-hoc programming functions to expedite and enhance the effectiveness of Inventory Analysis activities.
Participates in assessments, procedure reviews, and other integrated NMC&A projects/processes. Position may present results, findings, and observations to Production and upper management resulting from investigations and experiments. Position may help train and assist other sites within the complex on implementing Inventory Analysis activities.

Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree: Minimum 4 years of relevant experience
- OR Master's degree: Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
- OR PhD
Preferred Job Requirements
- Working knowledge of Y-12 systems (including SAP ME, the NMC&A accountability system, and LIMS), the Work Request process, and Production material flows, products, and processes is highly desirable
- Requires excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong analytical, problem solving, and interpersonal skills are necessary
- Attention to detail and organizational skills are essential
- Proficiency in Tableau, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft Excel is highly desirable
- UCNI Reviewing Official and Derivative Classifier qualifications or the ability to achieve these qualifications is desirable
