The Deputy Division Director (Deputy DD) for the APS Engineering Support (AES) Division reports to the AES Division Director. It plays a critical role in ensuring the division’s success across a broad range of strategic and tactical performance requirements.
The incumbent provides leadership and has line management responsibilities for technical programs, administrative activities, and division personnel. Acts as a division liaison/representative to nearly all division operational functions and to division partners and stakeholders. Interacts with Laboratory management, notably including Laboratory support organizations for conventional facilities and business information systems.
- Seamlessly collaborates with the APS staff, as well as Division Directors, to ensure that PSC has access to appropriate capabilities for sustained, high-reliability operations.
- Serves as a key member of the Directorate senior leadership team working directly with PSC Directorate senior leaders to provide a combination of strategic, operational, and technical/functional leadership in the integration of varied resources needed to meet technical, fiscal, and scientific requirements of the Advanced Photon Source.
- Support division strategy aligned with APS operational excellence, upgrade initiatives, and long-term facility sustainment.
- Provide integrated oversight across engineering support, IT infrastructure, and information systems.
- Ensure effective coordination with APS divisions and Laboratory support organizations.
- Oversee execution of technical programs, administrative activities, and division personnel management.
- Monitor operational performance, financial stewardship, risk posture, and resource planning.
- Support DOE-compliant project management practices and lifecycle engineering processes.
- Provide leadership for IT and IS teams supporting accelerator operations, scientific computing, engineering workflows, and enterprise systems.
- Advance integration of digital engineering platforms, asset management systems, configuration databases, and operational data environments.
- Strengthen cybersecurity, data governance, and reliability engineering capabilities.
- Ensure all division activities comply with Argonne ES&H policies, Safeguards and Security requirements, and laboratory operational standards.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Serve as liaison to Laboratory management and institutional support organizations (facilities, business systems, cybersecurity).
- Collaborate with APS scientific leadership and external stakeholders to ensure mission alignment.
- Represent AES in directorate-wide initiatives and strategic programs.
- Leaders at Argonne are expected to demonstrate a high level of competency, including strategic agility, team building, clear communication, trust-building, and accountability.
Position Requirements
- Significant experience leading multidisciplinary technical organizations within DOE national laboratories, large scientific facilities, or comparable complex environments.
- Demonstrated experience integrating engineering, IT, and information systems functions in support of mission-critical operations.
- Proven leadership in operational management, program oversight, and organizational development.
- Knowledge of DOE operational standards, ES&H requirements, and project management practices.
- Strong financial stewardship, risk management, and performance management experience.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage senior leadership and diverse technical teams.
- Demonstrated commitment to Argonne’s core values: impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
- Experience supporting accelerator facilities, synchrotron light sources, or large-scale research infrastructure.
- Leadership experience in IT/IS modernization, digital engineering platforms, AI-enabled operations, or enterprise data integration.
- Experience leading organizational transformation or technical capability development initiatives.
