Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Responsibilities
The Enterprise Network Services team within the Information Technology directorate is seeking a high-performing individual to join our team as a Master Technologist.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform diagnostic test to assess the performance and integrity of fiber optic links, including measuring signal strength, decrease and optical loss.
- Configuration, deployment, and upgrade of core optical transport equipment, specifically DWDM ROADM networks utilizing Ciena 6500 series.
- Analyze data by interpreting test results to determine the cause of network problems, such as fiber cuts, bends or damaged connectors.
- Identify network issues utilizing ODTRs and power meters to locate faults, breaks or signal degradation in fiber optic cables.
- Conduct copper cable repairs and fiber optic splicing to restore connectivity and eliminate signal disruptions.
- Ensure the fiber optic installations and repairs meet industry standard and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure the fiber optics network is being maintained accurately and documented in mapping software as assigned by the company.
- Follow and perform worksite job safety briefs and follow organization work controls process.
- Schedule and assign work to junior team members based on priority and skill level.
- Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to team members to ensure high performance and skill development.
- Conduct work site walk-throughs and interact with customers for requirements gathering, provide technical support, create material list, develop tasks.
- Prepare and submit project progress, team performance, and technical issues reports and communicate effectively with management and stakeholders.
- Provide input into budget, new technologies, and monitors expenditures.
- May respond to Help Desk requests to support troubleshooting of network related problems.
- Coordinates with other departments within the company/labs and with outside vendors.
- Interprets customer needs, provides solutions and input to reports and/or proposals.
- Provide solutions for highly complex assignment-related problems.
Qualifications
- Associate degree in field related to the position plus at least 12 years’ progressive related experience or High School diploma plus 14 years’ progressive related experience.
- Experience designing, deploying, and supporting optical/DWDM ROADM networks and protected wavelength services.
- Strong understanding of WAN/LAN systems used to transmit voice, data and video across digital and fiber optic WAN/LAN infrastructure.
- Experience with commercial carrier services and managing the system interconnects.
- Understanding of ANSI, EIA/TIA industry standards (25pr color code, T568A&B color code, etc.).
- Demonstrate knowledge of CAT 3, CAT 5 and CAT 6 cabling functions and specifications.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Single-mode and multi-mode fiber functions and specifications.
- Basic knowledge of power systems including but not limited to PDU’s, Fuse alarm panels.
- Provide backup and second level coverage to Technical Support Representatives as assigned.
- Learn and comply with validation requirements, standard-operating procedures (SOP), and change control maintenance for product life cycle.
- May be required to participate in the Human Reliability Program (HRP).
- Participation in after-hours support pool. Requirements include evening and weekend availability.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Candidate must be a team player with good customer service skills and the ability to work flexible hours if required.
- The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada) in Mercury, NV.
- Work schedule for this position will be 4/10’s, Monday – Thursday (subject to change).
- Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2 , “Personnel Security”. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 , “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709 , “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”

$96,116.80 - $144,185.60.
Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
