What You'll Do
The incumbent serves as technical support for nuclear material measurements related to the NMC&A program at the Y-12 Complex, providing critical oversight for the measurement, control, and accountability of nuclear materials. This role is responsible for planning and performing a variety of NDA measurements, researching and implementing new technologies, and serving as technical measurement support for Nuclear Materials Control and Accountability (NMC&A) personnel. The position requires mastery of nuclear engineering or physics principles and knowledge of various NDA systems to ensure compliance with Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) requirements.
The employee will lead the development of calibration plans, measurement strategies, and procedures for new processes across the site. This position demands significant originality and judgment to resolve complex technical issues, adapt guidelines for unique challenges, and make immediate, high-consequence decisions to safeguard national assets. The work is essential to the integrity of the nuclear material inventory and requires effective communication and influence with all levels of management and production staff to ensure the safety and security of site operations.
Oversees and performs various NDA measurement planning and execution throughout the complex, including quantitative, inventory verification, and special anomaly resolution measurements using various NDA systems. Serves as technical support to Nuclear Materials Control and Accountability (NMC&A) personnel and production on measurement issues. Researches and implements new NDA technology.
Provides technical guidance and communicates findings to all levels of management. Makes decisions on behalf of NMC&A regarding measurement results or nuclear material safeguards to ensure the protection of assets. Interfaces with other measurement groups to review techniques and applications.

Minimum Job Requirements
ABET
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science/Information Technology from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET AND 4 years of relevant experience
- OR MS in Engineering /Physical science and 2 years of relevant experience
- OR PhD in Engineering /Physical science
GPA
There is a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript. Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.
- 3.0/4.0 minimum cumulative GPA for Bachelor degree
- 3.3 minimum cumulative GPA for Master degree
- 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA for PhD
Preferred Job Requirements
- Broad knowledge of plant facilities and operations, and a demonstrated understanding of measurements as it relates to operations.
- Work related experience referenced above must include knowledge of CNS Y-12’s NM manufacturing operations and processes, the physical and chemical characteristics and properties of NM; and the process through which NM is measured through all phases of movement: receipt, shipment, and inventory.
- Knowledge of composition codes, DOE material type codes, Y-12 material form codes, and NMMSS transactions codes is desired.
- Education or experience should include proficiency in computer software such as Microsoft Access and Excel.
- Knowledge of measurement and modeling techniques such as generalized geometry holdup, high-purity germanium, active well coincidence counter, solution assay system, sodium iodide, lanthanum bromide, cadmium zinc telluride, thermal ionization mass spectrometry, and others is highly desired.
- This position requires the successful candidate to be a team player that is self-motivated and can work with limited supervision.
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills are a must.
- Requires good interpersonal and communications skills.
- Candidate must be detail oriented and possess good organizational skills.
