We are seeking a talented Electrical Engineer to join the Field Intelligence Element (FIE). The FIE enables Argonne National Laboratory to provide products and services to DOE’s Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence (DOE-IN), the Intelligence Community (IC), and non-IC federal agencies.
Primary Responsibilities:
Maintain and improve the current suite of software tools used for laboratory and field experimental operation within the group. This includes adapting these pieces of software to meet the varying needs of the experiments. This task will require the candidate to become fluent in our current software designs and be able to diagnose issues down to the network layer.
Design new and replacement software and hardware components to improve upon the existing systems.
Ability to travel up to 15% of the time is required. Travel includes field trials in domestic and international locations to deploy, test, develop, and gather data on sensor and monitoring systems.
Assist in long-term planning of project direction and scope as new opportunities arise.
The successful candidate will:
Have hands-on skills in soldering, basic cable assembly, use of test equipment, basic troubleshooting, and integration of commercial technology into specialized platforms
Have an undergraduate or graduate degree in electrical engineering
Demonstrate an interest in learning and applying software technologies relevant to the development and maintenance of scientific control systems
Have the ability to program in a variety of languages (Python, Javascript, R, C++); have experience in software life-cycle phases and source/release control; be familiar with various operating systems for both desktop and single-board computers
Be proficient in Python, and have competence in one or more of the following technologies: Linux, make utilities, C, C++, Java, shell scripting, client/server applications, relational databases and user interface design, and web services
Be cognizant of good design practices in terms of software and network security
Be able to create impromptu solutions in resource-constrained environments
Be self-motivated, detail-oriented with good programming disciplines including code documentation and version control
Have good interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
Mechanical skills desirable. Able to assist in design and construction of field deployable test apparatus.
Position Requirements
Ability to understand and modify existing schematics, printed circuit board layouts, interconnects, and cable design
Ability to understand communication protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, i2C, and other common serial protocols)
Ability to design and construct custom printed circuit boards
Modify existing Python-based control system software to meet future project needs
Ability to create new control system software utilizing modern programming design tools and techniques
Knowledge of the operation of radiation detection instrumentation
Ability to design and create intuitive graphical user interfaces (GUIs) to control system applications and work with end users through an iterative process to refine the GUIs
Ability to support and enhance existing control system tools and applications
Ability to create relational database applications and web-based tools
Knowledge of software techniques in connection with control system and sensing applications.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD2 or RD3) depending upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience brought to the position. The requirements for the desired levels are as follows:
RD2 Level: Bachelor’s and 5+ years; Master’s and 3+ years; Doctorate and 0+ years in electrical engineering, or equivalent. The expected pay range for this position is $94,486 - $147,399.
RD3 Level: Bachelor’s and 8+ years; Master’s and 5+ years; Doctorate and 4+ years in electrical engineering, or equivalent. The expected pay range for this position is $116,250 - $181,350.
