Build what protects the nation.
At Y-12, you’ll do work that matters — supporting missions vital to national and global security while advancing your career in one of the most specialized engineering environments in the country. We’re seeking a Welding Engineer who thrives on precision, collaboration, and innovation.
What You’ll Do
As a Welding Engineer, you’ll provide both field and central office support to project engineering, facility operations, construction, and maintenance activities. Your work will ensure every weld meets the highest standards for safety, compliance, and performance.
You will:
- Conduct field walkdowns, supplier discussions, and document reviews across all project phases — from feasibility to detailed design.
- Develop and write welding, brazing, and bonding procedures compliant with AWS A2.4, ASME B31, and ASME Section IX.
- Train engineering, maintenance, and construction personnel on welding requirements and compliance documentation.
- Review design outputs for welding technical data and code compliance.
- Evaluate supplier submittals, lead surveillance audits, and ensure contract compliance.
- Maintain oversight of Filler Material (Rod) Rooms and generate Weld Inspection Records (WIRs) and weld maps.
- Lead corrective actions through Installation Change Requests (ICRs) and Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs).
- Provide in-process welding oversight and support on-site and off-site projects.
You’ll apply your technical mastery of SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW processes, as well as specialized welding for stainless-steel high-vacuum applications, to solve complex engineering challenges.
