What You'll Do
The Fire Captain is responsible for supervision of a medium-sized team of firefighters. Work involves supervising, assisting with directing, and participating in firefighting activities and/or the administration of department programs.
- Assists supervisor in directing and participates in fire and non-fire related emergency situations, to include but not limited to fire, emergency medical, and hazardous area calls.
- Assists supervisor in planning and supervising the operation of a shift; coordinates shift functions such as scheduling or work inspection of trucks, equipment and buildings, answering employee questions, and resolving employee grievances.
- Manages and maintains assigned programs in compliance with Plant, State, and Federal requirements.
- Assists in directing and participates in department training, practice drills, preplanning sessions and educational programs.
- Participates in establishing department policies and procedures, goals, and objectives.
- Prepares and maintains a number of reports; (e.g., state fire incident report, officer’s daily log, emergency medical reports, etc.)
- Assigns work and tasks to subordinates by specifying tasks parameters, i.e. quality, quantity, resources and expected completion time.
- Develops plans to achieve tasks and goals and adheres to these plans in establishing the limits within which the subordinates’ tasks must be accomplished.
- Manages all inspections conducted by firefighters
- Orients new firefighters in proper performances of duties.
- Identifies and request needed maintenance of emergency vehicles, equipment and Fire Department facilities.
- Leads the initial response to fire, medical, rescue, and hazardous materials emergencies; takes command until relieved by his/her manager.
- Conducts training for firefighters on emergency vehicles, equipment, related duties in firefighting, medical treatment, fire prevention inspections, and fire prevention safety lectures for Plant employees.
- Accountable for all direct output assigned and for providing direct support to his/her manager.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Attends and/or successfully completes training classes as determined by the Fire Department Training Coordinator.
- Training and development Technologies department through General Employee Training (Reference Department of Energy (DOE) Order 426.2), and Management.
- Participates in worker involvement including input-to-work planning and methods to identify hazards and controls.
- Respects a worker’s right to stop work when they feel their personal safety is jeopardized and takes responsibility to resolve the concerns within the organization.
- Attends and/or conducts required safety meetings and training.
- Offers suggestions on improvements to the work environment.

Minimum Job Requirements
- High school diploma with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience
- OR an Associate degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
- Certified by Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) as an Intermediate Firefighter at a minimum
- Certified by TCFP as Hazardous Materials- Technician at a minimum
- Certified by Texas Department of State Health Services as a Basic Emergency Medical Technician at a minimum
- Must be certified from TCFP as Fire Officer I
- Must become certified by the TCFP as Fire Inspector within one year
- Must become certified by the TCFP as Fire Officer II within two years
Preferred Job Requirements
- Principles of Incident Command
- Strategy and tactics of the fire department operations
- Ability to use Windows based software for administrative work
- Certified by Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) as an Advanced Firefighter or higher.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
