About the Role:
A Survey Professional (Construction Specialist III) is sought to join Fermilab’s Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) and Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) Project team in Lead, South Dakota. The LBNF/DUNE Project is hosted by Fermilab in Batavia, IL, with participation from universities and laboratories around the world. The project includes construction of a beamline and near detector at Fermilab and a large underground detector at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota. LBNF/DUNE will design and construct one of the largest proposed neutrino experiments in the world over the next several years.
Under minimal supervision, the Survey Professional independently plans, coordinates, and oversees all aspects of complex survey and layout activities on construction projects, ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with specifications, codes, and standards. This role includes supervising and mentoring less experienced survey personnel and collaborating with project stakeholders to ensure survey deliverables align with project requirements.
What your day-to-day as a Survey Professional at Fermilab will look like:
- Create and deliver complete survey work packages, including plans, specifications, and recommendations prior to procurement and execution.
- Serve as a Fermilab Task Manager and Construction Coordinator (TM/CC), supervising and planning the work of survey crews and subcontractors performing layout and verification of construction elements.
- Supervise and mentor developing survey staff, task managers, and coordinators on field execution and best practices.
- Plan and execute precise control networks, establish benchmarks, and perform layout of structural, mechanical, and utility components in support of construction activities.
- Perform and review complex field measurements, ensuring that work conforms to contract specifications, design documents, and applicable standards.
- Oversee and validate as-built data collection, documentation, and deliverables; resolve discrepancies between field conditions and design.
- Interact with project management and engineering to define survey requirements, labor and material needs, and sequencing of tasks to meet project schedules.
- Monitor ongoing survey activities to ensure compliance with contract specifications, construction codes, ES&H plans, and applicable OSHA standards.
- Prepare independent cost estimates for survey work, review subcontractor invoices, and perform acceptance inspections of completed work.
- Review and negotiate variations requested by subcontractors or field teams, approving or escalating as appropriate.
- Coordinate survey activities with ongoing Laboratory operations, including construction mobilization, utility service interruptions, traffic control, and other site-specific needs.
- Oversee subcontractor and internal staff adherence to ES&H requirements, equipment manufacturer’s specifications, and hazard analyses.
- Conduct job site meetings, preliminary discussions, and final acceptance inspections of survey-related work.
- Issue documentation on non-compliance, recommend corrective actions, and maintain proper records of survey work progress and quality.
- May supervise or lead a team, including hiring, training, reviews, and disciplinary actions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Abide by and ensure all activities are performed in accordance with environmental, health, and safety regulations and Fermilab policies, procedures, and practices.
Skills and Attributes for Success:
- Associate’s degree or equivalent in a related field with 10+ years of heavy industrial/commercial surveying experience, or a bachelor’s degree in surveying, construction management, engineering, or a related field with 5+ years of experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in construction surveying, layout, and verification in heavy industrial or large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Thorough knowledge of survey equipment, practices, and technologies including total stations, GPS, laser scanners, and software tools for data collection and analysis.
- Strong understanding of construction disciplines, including excavation, structural, mechanical, and utility systems, and how they relate to survey work.
- Proven ability to manage complex projects, mentor junior staff, and coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Ability to legally operate a government vehicle if required.
