The External Communications Department in the Communications and Public Affairs Division at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) seeks a versatile and strategic Science Writer / Editor to advance the Laboratory’s mission through compelling public-facing content. We’re seeking a candidate who combines strong writing and editorial skills with a talent for coordinating communications efforts that span platforms, partners, and scientific domains.
This position requires the ability to translate complex scientific research into engaging, accessible narratives for multiple audiences including technical and non-technical groups while ensuring institutional alignment with both laboratory and Department of Energy (DOE) priorities. The selected candidate will craft and coordinate content for web pages, feature articles, news releases, social media, communication campaigns, and more—all in service of amplifying Argonne’s national and global scientific impact.

The Science Writer & Communications Editor will work closely with researchers, leadership, and communications colleagues to develop and manage storytelling strategies that support institutional goals. The role requires independence, sound judgment, and strong collaboration in a dynamic environment with tight deadlines and evolving priorities.
Position Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to research, write, and edit science-based content for diverse platforms, including digital, print, and social media.
- Skill in translating complex scientific information into accessible and engaging content that resonates with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience coordinating communications projects and editorial workflows, including timelines, approvals, and stakeholder engagement.
- Strong knowledge of communications planning and the ability to align storytelling with institutional messaging and DOE priorities.
- Familiarity with standard editorial practices and style guides, including The Chicago Manual of Style, Associated Press Stylebook, and standard American English usage.
- Demonstrated experience enforcing style, tone, and brand consistency across varied content types and distribution channels.
- Awareness of DOE and federal sponsor guidelines to ensure compliance and alignment with communication protocols.
- Working knowledge of artificial intelligence tools to enhance editorial workflows, improve productivity, and support content development; familiarity with AI agents is a plus.
- Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects with limited supervision, meet tight deadlines, and balance editorial judgment with organizational priorities.
- Supports Argonne’s crisis communication function, including participation in planning exercises and active response efforts as needed.
- Experience in scientific, academic, or research-based environments—such as a national laboratory, university, or science media outlet—is preferred.
