Job Description
Savannah River National Laboratory is seeking a Rad Waste Characterization Engineer. The successful applicant will provide technical capability for established SRNL waste programs to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, orders, and laws and site procedures.
Specific Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To
- Evaluating potential impacts of regulatory changes on SRNL research and development and operations processes and providing recommendations to management;
- Defining the requirements for radioactive waste management programs, procedures, and training and qualification requirements;
- Providing technical expertise for the laboratory for disposal of all waste types (i.e., LLW, TRU Waste, and radioactive portion of PCB waste, Nano waste, Mixed Waste, and Mixed TRU Waste);
- Developing radiological characterization plans for unique waste and waste streams (including calculations, sampling and analysis plans, certification or characterization plans, and work packages for processes and research and development initiatives);
- Analyzing construction and special project plans for the creation of new waste streams; Performing periodic waste stream validations.
- The job function includes maintaining external associations such as technical committees, professional societies and licenses to remain current with waste management and other industry best practices, if applicable.
- Support programmatic and/or facility continuous improvement initiatives. Responsibilities include pursuing implementation of Pollution Prevention / Waste Minimization objectives.
- Attend plan-of-the-day, plan-of-week, and project meetings as necessary to maintain awareness of facility activities.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Chemical or Nuclear Engineering degree preferred; other engineering disciplines acceptable; significant demonstrable experience performing rad waste calculations will be considered with a minimum of 5 years of experience and BS degree. Ability to walk down field or facility sites is also required.
