As Deputy Director for Operations, the incumbent will assist the Argonne’s Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) Director of Operations in coordinating and managing the facility’s operational activities. This Deputy will help oversee the group’s day-to-day operations, including project and asset management. Will work closely with division management and other team leads to meet users’ science needs and requirements. Ensures the ALCF meets its milestones and performance metrics during both construction and operation of deployed systems. Responsible for managing acquisitions and ensuring seamless communication and alignment across operations teams. Works with the other ALCF teams to improve the reliability and usability of the systems operated by the ALCF.
The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility provides the computational science community with a world-class computing capability dedicated to breakthrough science and engineering. Aurora is one of the world’s first exscale supercomputers, able to perform over a quintillion calculations per second. Housed at the ALCF, a Department of Energy Office of Science user facility, it’s high computing speed and artificial intelligences capabilities enable science that was impossible yesterday.
Position Requirements
Required knowledge, skills, and experience:
- Extensive knowledge of and expertise in high-performance computing (HPC) and system architecture, deployment and operation, and in leading system support efforts.
- In-depth knowledge and experience in operating a production computing facility and experience with installation, configuration, and management of large numbers of computers, emphasizing high-performance computers such as clusters of Linux boxes, large SMPs, and hybrids.
- Advanced knowledge of high-performance networking technologies such as HPE Slingshot and Infiniband.
- Thorough familiarity with the hardware and software of disk and tape-based mass storage systems.
- Solid familiarity with the operation and maintenance of COTS PC hardware.
- Extensive experience and expertise with cybersecurity issues, including monitoring and incident response.
- Significant experience and project management skills, including understanding technical requirements and engineering solutions
- Strong skill and flexibility in coordinating various activities to organize and manage complex operations and developing, tracking, and managing multiple priorities.
- Exceptional collaborative and communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to motivate staff and establish effective interpersonal relationships with contractors, external research parties, and cross-functional teams in various disciplines
- Skilled in data gathering and reporting to leadership and other stakeholders.
- Robust leadership and management skills, including accountability for consensus building and technical performance and troubleshooting.
- A Bachelor of Science degree with at least 2+ years of experience in project management and planning; a minimum of 6+ years of experience in HPC systems administration and management.
- To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.
Preferred knowledge, skills and experience:
- Experience with AI workflows and software stacks
- Managing small to moderate sized Kubernetes clusters
