The Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM) at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking an exceptional Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Electron & X-ray Microscopy Group in a core position within the Quantum Theme, focusing on Next-Generation Quantum Systems. The successful candidate will lead efforts to discover and design quantum emitters with desirable properties for quantum information science (QIS) applications.
This research aims to advance the fundamental understanding of quantum emitters by investigating their atomic structures and correlating them with optical properties. Emission dynamics will be studied under external influences such as strain, polarization, electric fields, and moiré interfaces.
The work will leverage the Quantum Emitter Electron Nanomaterial Microscope (QuEEN-M)—a cutting-edge platform that integrates atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy with cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and ultrafast electron beam pulsers.
Position Requirements
Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field
Extensive expertise in aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), including 4D-STEM, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and diffraction techniques for TEM
Experience with cathodoluminescence microscopy in scanning electron microscope or scanning transmission electron microscope, as well as electrostatic beam blanker or ultrafast pulser in electron microscopes.
Proficient in data analysis and modeling, with experience using Python and other programming or simulation tools
Strong ability to collaborate with a diverse research community and provide scientific guidance
Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment
Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork
