Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a
Automation Engineer and join our team located in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, programming, testing and troubleshooting of instrumentation, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and controls systems. The candidate will be responsible for design changes, following the Engineering Change Notice process. The candidate shall be able to create logic, program, and troubleshoot using RSLogix Studio 5000, RSLogix 500, Factory Talk View, and other PLC programming suites as needed. The candidate shall be able to interface instruments, field devices, and other equipment to existing site PLCs, and provide interface support with our site SCADA software (Ignition). The candidate shall have a technical understanding of interfacing with SCADA software. The candidate shall have a working knowledge of media conversion and communication protocols such as Modbus and TCP/IP and their application to connecting PLCs and field devices. The candidate shall have a working knowledge of mechanical and electrical instrumentation, actuators, and variable frequency drives. In addition, the candidate will be required to support other groups as directed. The candidate will support testing and commissioning activities as directed. Some travel will be required, but will be limited.
Minimum Requirements

- Bachelor's degree with two (2) years of technical experience, or
- Associate's degree with six (6) years of technical experience, or
- High School Diploma or Equivalency with ten (10) years of technical experience is required.
- Technical experience must include at least two (2) years of programming, troubleshooting, and testing PLCs.
- Some technical experience in system control/integration, automation and networking is required.
- Must have strong interface skills and be able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal direction.
Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
Preferred Requirements
- BS in Engineering or technical field.
- Ignition Certified Training and/or Rockwell Automation Certified Training.
- PLC development experience with Rockwell PLCs, including GuardLogix, and safety PLCs.
- Experience with Safety Instrumented System (SIS) design considerations.
- Experience with surface and underground mining Industrial Control Systems (ICS) systems and related equipment.
- Previous WIPP Project experience.

Exempt grade level(s) 30-36. Minimum salary $80,609 per year of a larger salary range --the specific salary offered to a candidate will be influenced by a variety of factors, particularly the candidate’s relevant experience and education.
