Job Description
Savannah River National Laboratory's (SRNL) Environmental and Legacy Management (ELM) directorate is seeking an experienced, career-level Microbiologist/Biologist Research Scientist. This position is responsible for conducting research and development activities in Algal Biotechnology/Bioprocessing and/or Genetic Modification of Microorganisms. The individual’s primary focus will be to perform, assist, and guide the synthetic biology research at SRNL via literature review, data analysis, laboratory work, and proposal, report and manuscript writing.
Responsibilities
The individual will function as a member of an interdisciplinary research team to collaboratively develop projects, proposals, research analyses, reports, and manuscripts. The individual will function as a team member with other scientists both within and outside the lab, or at other organizations, in supporting discovery and applied biological research efforts. The position is focused on leading, advancing, developing, and applying science and research and development, to anticipate, innovate, and deliver solutions to Laboratory missions. The work requires the individual to exhibit scholarship through the ability to search, read, and understand primary scientific literature and contribute in technical and scholarly aspects to establish and guide short and long-term goals and objectives within the lab. The individual is expected to create prototypes to demonstrate results, present results of research to appropriate scientific and business audiences and may participate in commercialization of results, as well as conduct and gather research to further the biology research at SRNL.
Successful Candidates Will
- Have proficiency in one or more of the following relevant technical skill sets:
- Synthetic biology experience
- Experience with bioreactor/pilot scale and scale-up
- Work safely with particular attention to quality.
- Comply with all policies and standards.
- Maintain appropriate level government security clearance.
- Practice investigative techniques to determine the best approach.
- Think critically, analyze data, and integrate these skills into effective experimental design, execution, and reporting.
- Ability to scope technical tasks and develop creative solutions.
- Create internal alliances outside the immediate team or department.
- Effectively communicate (verbal & written) technical results and interface with customers.
- Understand how their role relates to others on the team and the role of the team in supporting the ELM mission.
- Develop expertise within their discipline.
- Develop novel solutions and creative proposals to secure additional research funding.
- Gain proficiency with site policies and testing protocols.
- Perform program management and laboratory custodianship responsibilities.
- May mentor and/or train early-career engineers and scientists.
- Help others manage departmental change.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- MS in Microbiology, Biology or Biochemistry and 6-8 years of relevant experience
- PhD in Microbiology, Biology or Biochemistry and 5-7 years of relevant experience
- Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance for which U.S. Citizenship is legally required.

SRNL’s Environmental & Legacy Management (ELM) Directorate closely collaborates with the Department of Energy (DOE) and site contractors to develop, mature, and apply science and technology needed to resolve environmental challenges and advance legacy management missions. As the lead laboratory for Environmental Management (DOE-EM) and Legacy Management (DOE-LM), SRNL applies our talent and expertise to develop and deploy innovative approaches and technologies to reduce risk, cost, and schedule of environmental cleanup and nuclear material processing.
