Job Description
SRNL’s Biological and Analytical Sciences group is seeking a qualified Molecular Biologist/Microbiologist/Environmental Scientist to help grow the Laboratory’s portfolio in the areas of molecular microbiology and bio-manufacturing. Successful candidates would have a Ph.D. in molecular biology, environmental science or biology related field, possess a demonstrated ability to perform organized independent field-relevant research in phototrophic molecular biology, the ability to solve and interpret data to solve problems, and extensive lab experience. Field of study capabilities include genetics, genomics and molecular biology.
Role
In the role, the candidate will work on interdisciplinary teams to propose and define scope of technical programs and develop effective and efficient solutions to challenging problems, including development of first of kind concepts in bio-manufacturing for:
- gaining an understanding of microbial community and genetic factors in microecological population dynamics
- search for and develop molecular level understandings of the response of autotrophs to various stimuli
The Postdoctoral Research Associate positions are fixed term assignments within the company and benefits eligible.
Responsibilities
- Molecular investigation of dynamic systems
- Development of new photosynthetic technologies for energy production
- Able to communicate well in both straightforward and ambiguous situations.
- Assist with tests and studies as needed and frequently participate in advanced experiments.
- Present and publish results of research to scientific and business audiences.
- Practice investigative techniques and be willing to solve issues and pivot as necessary.
- Create groups outside the immediate team to resolve scientific problems.
- Ability to work successfully with multidiscipline teams to solve problems.
- Train and mentor younger and/or less experienced employees.
- Help set up and maintain a research laboratory.
- Work with attention to safety and quality in accordance with policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD plus 0-3 years in the field
- Individuals must have completed all requirements for their PhD by the start of employment
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate level U.S. Government security clearance for which U.S. Citizenship is required.

About The Team
SRNL’s Environmental & Legacy Management (ELM) Directorate closely collaborates with the Department of Energy (DOE) and site contractors to develop, mature, and apply science and technology needed to resolve environmental challenges and advance legacy management missions. As the lead laboratory for Environmental Management (DOE-EM) and Legacy Management (DOE-LM), SRNL applies our talent and expertise to develop and deploy innovative approaches and technologies to reduce risk, cost, and schedule of environmental cleanup and nuclear material processing. Additionally, ELM is using our competencies to develop new materials and processes for a range of clean energy applications.
