We’re hiring a KDI Data Engineer to work with the sponsors and research users to deliver and maintain data pipelines including ETL and reporting workflows as well as data management and data lifecycles! As a Data Engineer, you should be comfortable several technologies including Linux, SQL, Python, containers, Pandas, Spark, and source control in a high security environment.
The Knowledge Discovery Infrastructure (KDI) program serves to facilitate research activities on data that has been entrusted to ORNL by the U.S Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) and other agencies. KDI Data Engineers work on some of the most ambitious and impactful research and development programs in healthcare informatics, bioinformatics, and computer science!
This position resides in the Emerging Technologies & Computing group in the Research Computing division, in the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Developing high-scale, robust data warehouses, and data lakes with special focus on the state-of-the-art solutions for healthcare, life sciences, and genomics.
- Collaborating with research teams to understand data needs, and providing expertise to research teams, and other team members about the data models, query optimizations, and schema interpretation.
- Designing, building, and launching new data/study marts for the major national research programs.
- Designing, building, and launching new data quality, data extraction, transformation and loading processes.
- Designing and developing architectures for intake, curation, organization, and dissemination of data in support of data science and related disciplines.
- Designing and development of high-performance database architectures.
- Researching and evaluating the state-of-the-art data and information management technologies.
- Working on a variety of data assignments; collaborate with scientists and engineers, and expect to produce reliable data products and systems.

Basic Qualifications:
- A BS in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, information systems, science, engineering, business, or a related field of study and a minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of aligned professional experience is required for consideration.
- Masters and PhD degree holders in the same fields of study are also encouraged to apply. Masters holders should have four (4) to six (6) years of aligned professional experience and PhD holders should have at one (1) to three (3) years of aligned professional experience.
- Three (3) or more years of experience in the following areas:
- Database development and/or design.
- Health data and code systems (ICD, CPT, LOINC, etc) in research or reporting (MIPS, eCQM, MU, etc)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with the VA’s Corporate Data Warehouse.
- Demonstrated experience with performance tuning SQL in a big data warehouse.
- 5+ years of experience in the following areas:
- Basic and advanced SQL, database programming, and scripting languages (Python preferred).
- Data warehousing systems.
- Data driven software development.
- Knowledge of database system administration.
- Demonstrated expertise with OLTP and data warehousing, SQL Server is preferred.
- Experience in designing analytics data systems.
- Experience working with Big Data processing frameworks such as Spark, Dask, and Pandas.
- Familiarity with Big Data and NoSQL architectures.
- Proven experience with collecting, organizing, storing, and preparing data analysis.
- Ability to conduct tasks independently and communicate effectively to team members and customers.
- Experience with heath care informatics is highly desired.
- Working experience or basic understanding of AI/ML data requirements.

- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
