Job Description
The Global Security Directorate at Savannah River National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to develop the next generation of ultra-sensitive radiation detectors for the underground counting facility (UCF) at SRNL. The UCF is a core pillar of the Facility for Underground Science and Engineering (FUSE) at SRNL and requires world class instrumentation development to see it into the future. These instruments will be used to measure and quantify ultra-trace levels of radionuclides in environmental samples for national security R&D, environmental sciences (e.g., radiometric age dating), and further detector development (e.g., materials assay).
The Postdoctoral Research Associate positions are fixed term assignments within the company and benefits eligible.
Responsibilities
- Deep understanding of ultra-low background techniques and complicated nature of shield all naturally occurring radiation and eliminating radioactivity from detector materials.
- Experience in radiation detector development and methods
- Experience in radiation transport modeling and simulations (GEANT4)
- Ability to communicate scientific results to a broad spectrum of scientific peers and stakeholders.
These skills are typically acquired in the pursuit of nuclear/particle physics or nuclear engineering PhD. Particularly in the field of rare event physics (dark matter searches, neutrino less double beta decay, etc.) that takes place in deep underground laboratories.
This position will allow a junior researcher to take the skills they acquired from a fundamental science education and apply them toward national security priorities.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD + 0-1 yrs
- Individuals must have completed all requirements for their PhD by the start of employment.
