Overview:
We are seeking a Chemical Operator. In this role you will, under limited supervision, assist Transportation Management staff with the preparation of radioactive materials for transport. This position resides in the Transportation Management group in the Transportation and Waste Management Division (TWMD), Environment, Safety, Health and Quality Directorate (ESH&Q) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform physical packaging of radioactive materials to ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT), International Air Transport Association (IATA), Department of Energy, and ORNL regulations and requirements.
- Perform On-Site transportation of radioactive materials and containers to support Transportation Management operations.
- Maintain record keeping associated with shipping and receiving of radioactive materials, including Special Nuclear Material (SNM) and accountable radioactive materials.
- Operate fork trucks, overhead cranes, and other vehicles as needed to load/unload casks from hot cells.
- Maintain facility/process logs or data sheets.
- Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Basic (or Required) Qualifications:
- High school diploma and a minimum of three years’ experience in nuclear operations, or Associate of Science Degree in a technical field.
- Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire physical will be required.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from DOE. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an on-going random drug testing program.
- This position requires Rad Worker II training (trained in-house after hire.)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior work experience in a nuclear facility is highly desirable.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
- Commercial Driver’s License with an H (hazardous materials) endorsement.
