Job Description
The Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) Office of Communications seeks to hire a Communications Specialist who will serve as the Office’s External Communications Lead. SRNL’s Office of Communications provides strategic and tactical communications counsel and the full spectrum of communication services to support the laboratory’s missions, strategic goals and other initiatives. At SRNL we put science to work to protect the environment, serve our national defense, secure our clean energy future and reduce emerging nuclear threats. We’re looking for a savvy and seasoned communications practitioner who is ready to leverage their storytelling, media relations and social media experiences and expertise to help advance SRNL’s brand by engaging with the media to build understanding of and support for SRNL’s mission. This challenging position offers the ability to help SRNL’s researchers, engineers and other professionals tell their stories to our audiences.
Responsibilities
The external communications lead proactively works across organizational constructs to identify, develop and deliver compelling communications products via multiple channels to support SRNL goals and priorities. Practitioners with a passion for building internal and external relationships, storytelling and developing high quality content will find this position challenging and rewarding.
This position requires fluency in AP Style, newswriting, copyediting, social media content development and management, and the ability to deliver highly effective media relations training for subject matter experts and senior leadership. This position also affords practitioners the opportunity to help shape communication strategies and tactics for long and short term initiatives, collate earned and social media metrics and provide analysis and recommendations based upon communication performance and stated goals. The External Communications Lead position is telework eligible, up to 50 percent.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS/BA in Public Relations, Communications, Mass Communications or Journalism.
- 7 years of directly relevant work experience
Preferred Qualifications
- MS in Public Relations, Strategic Communications or Journalism
- Current holder of, or active candidate for, APR/APR+M (Accreditation in Public Relations)
- Fluency in media monitoring/reporting services such as Meltwater, Muck Rack, Cision, etc.
- Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite applications.
- Photojournalism experience.
