BWXT is currently seeking a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA!

BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers. AT is seeking an Environmental Safety & Health Professional to join our team.
BWXT AT manages several facilities for research and development purposes that operate in compliances with Federal and State licenses to receive, possess, and utilize radioactive materials and radiological activities. The RSO is responsible for the execution of programs, processes, and procedures to safely manage these activities within the conditions of these licenses. This role supports both an Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) function and management of State-issued Licenses and Regulatory engagements, all within BWXT AT’s Regulatory and Mission Assurance (RMA) group.
Job Description / Duties:
- Develop and administer the radiation safety program for a VA state license for radioactive material management.
- Ensure radiological work is planned and executed according to procedure with ALARA principles applied.
- Develop and implement training for radiological workers.
- Participate in BWXT’s corrective action and audit/assessment programs for continuous improvement.
- Manage calibration services, as needed, for radiographic and other equipment.
- Manage regulatory invoices. Work with project teams and finance to pay invoices and assign cost appropriately, including management of any associated internal key performance indicators.
- Schedule and coordinate logistics for inspections and other audits. Coordinates document reviews for regulatory inspections and audits.
- Prepare submittal letters to regulatory authorities for all licensing-related activities and manage other key program documentation.
- Maintain regulatory communications postings for facilities as needed.
- Interface with all departments and all levels of management.
- Performs general office duties.
Job Qualifications / Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science or related degree program required.
- A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience.
- Must have a minimum of one (1) year prior experience in a role that implements Virginia Code 12VAC5-481 (Virginia Radiation Protection Regulations) or comparable Agreement States is desired.
- Experience which provides adequate background for managing Federal and/or State material licenses and their associated documentation.
- Excellent computer skills including knowledge of internal Advanced Technologies systems and processes. (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, SAP, Documentum).
- Must have excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.
- Must be a US Citizen with no dual citizenship.

Pay: $63,000 - $99,000
The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $63,000 and $99,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
