The Geoinformatics Engineering Group, within the Human Dynamics Section of the Geospatial Science and Human Security Division at ORNL is seeking Software Engineers. Candidates will assist in developing next-generation technologies that will support operational situational awareness products. We are looking for candidates who bring fresh ideas from areas including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, artificial intelligence, and data processing workflows. Our staff are flexible and hard-working, tackling problems across the software stack as we continue to solve complex national-scale security problems in the areas of spatial computing.
As part of our outstanding organization, you will focus on supporting the implementation of scalable systems and data solutions for high-volume and high-velocity data applications. The proposed solutions will include high-performance computing that can be applicable for several geospatially focused R&D projects in the domains of energy, transportation, and other cross-disciplinary geospatial applications. The software engineer works with research scientists across the labto research and develop cutting-edge software solutions to complex problems while leveraging the lab’s world-class resources.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Conduct technical development to support project-specific applications.
- Work with researchers to develop and deploy geospatial software solutions.
- Collaborate with a highly diverse and multidisciplinary teams in research, development, integration, testing, and deployment.

Basic Qualifications:
- BS in computer science or related field and two (2) years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience with programming languages (Java, Python, C++, etc.) or frontend web application frameworks (Angular, React, or Vue, etc).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with cloud concepts and web development frameworks.
- Experience developing software related to fields involving Geographic Information Systems or web application development
- Experience with software development best practices.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changing needs.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated leadership ability and a strong commitment to a team environment.

Q clearance with SCI:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
