Overview:
We are seeking a Research Staff Scientist who will focus on the application of statistics and advanced data analysis tools to environmental and ecological problems, microbial ecology, and environmental data management. This position resides in the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health Group in the Biodiversity and Sustainable Systems Section, Environmental Sciences Division, Biological and Environmental Systems Science Directorate at ORNL.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Process new (post 2018) TVA data. Conduct data completeness and consistency checks. Build a master sample table.
- Construct data dictionaries and lookup tables needed for data ingest. Write and test code to perform data ingest. Ingest data.
- Write and test code to perform data transformation. Transform data.
- Integrate new data with historical data. This task will focus on the existing historical data previously processed including benthic bioaccumulation, fish bioaccumulation, fish bioindicators, fish fertility, fish reproduction, fish reproductive competence, and food chain.
- Provide support on an as-needed basis for projects across the Environmental Sciences Division in the areas of data science, coding, statistical analysis, and data management.

Basic Qualifications:
- A MS degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Ecology, or a related discipline
- A minimum of 12 years of experience in data analysis and database management.
- Programming skills in Python/R
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with the data management workflows from the prior work done by ORNL ESD on the TVA Kingston Fossil Plant coal ash spill, ORNL and TVA data management best practices and requirements.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
