Purpose:
The Vehicle Power Electronics Research Group in Buildings and Transportation Science Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for a Technical Professional Staff Position to support the power electronics and electric machinery research at the National Transportation Research Center located at the ORNL Hardin Valley Campus. The successful candidate is expected to support the design, modeling, analysis, simulation, and testing of power electronic converters including dc/dc converters, inverters, and rectifiers, electromagnetic field transmitters and receivers, and electric motors, etc. This person will closely work with other research and technical professionals at the group.
Major Duties / Responsibilities:
- Perform modeling, simulation, and analysis of power electronic circuits.
- Design power electronic circuits including identification of voltage, current, and temperature stresses on the components and component selections.
- Instrument experimental test setups with power analyzers, oscilloscopes, and other test and measurement equipment.
- Test and validate power electronic circuits.

Basic Qualifications:
- MS in Electrical Engineering or bachelors degree with at least two years of experience.
- Working knowledge of fundamentals of electrical engineering as related to modeling, simulation, design, and analysis of power electronic converters.
- Experience with testing and evaluations of power electronic converters.
- Familiarity with printed circuit board designs and power electronics hardware development in general.
- Experience with circuit simulation tools such as PLEX, Simulink, PSIM, Saber, etc.
- Familiarity and understanding of control systems.
- Familiarity with electrical wiring, including signal level and power level with basic understanding of electrical schematics and diagrams.
- Ability to understand 3D engineering drawings of mechanical assemblies and systems.
- Have excellent written and oral communication skills to present the progress, seek feedback, and improve processes with researchers and external sponsors.
- Prior work experience with the industry will be valued for this position.
- A strong commitment to safety and scientific integrity is an important requirement.
Special Requirements:
Some travel may be required for this position to sponsor and partner facilities. No security clearance is required.
