About The Role
We are seeking a
Structural Engineer to join our team supporting the DOE's
Y-12 National Security Complex! This position is full-time and will be based out of Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Responsibilities
- Develop high quality detailed design packages including but not limited to:
- structural drawings (plans, sections and details) for various materials of construction (concrete, steel, masonry, cold-formed steel, timber),
- structural calculations,
- equipment anchorage,
- report preparation,
- drafting (or oversight of drafting), and
- preparation of construction specifications (generally in the form of general notes on the drawings).
- Provide engineering procurement and field technical support to implement structural designs.
- Perform building evaluations and modifications, seismic analyses and rehab, oversight of outside engineering firms, and machine installations.
- Plan, self-perform and/or direct engineering design team activities on a project which include, but are not limited to:
- development of detailed project scope,
- design time-lines,
- functions and requirements,
- design basis and criteria,
- design schedule and tracking,
- project engineering budget,
- calculations,
- research,
- design review,
- inter-discipline design coordination,
- design approval,
- design change control,
- specifications,
- approval of contractor technical and material submittals, and
- field verification of construction compliance to design.
- Provide expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant facilities.
- Prepares conceptual engineering deliverables such as:
- cost-estimating bills of material and man-hour estimates,
- statements of work,
- design criteria, and
- design engineering deliverables.
- Effectively and cooperatively work as a team member of an integrated project team or as a technical lead for a multi-discipline task.
- Routinely perform walkdowns in the existing plant facilities in order to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.
- Provide self-performed technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems through the application of established engineering practices, codes and standards.
- Routinely provide input to system engineers and other plant customers.
Requirements
- Education & Years of Experience – Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-Accredited School and 10+ years of relevant experience.
- Citizenship – To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.
- Clearance – To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed.
- Must have technical expertise and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field of Structural Engineering.
- Must have strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interface effectively with various clients, production and support organizations, management, and hourly wage employees.
- Must be willing to work in a production environment.
- Must be proficient with developing structural drawings for various materials of construction, structural calculations, and equipment anchorage.
- Must be familiar with consensus design codes.
Desired Skills
- Structural modeling experience with STAAD Pro, highly preferred.
- CAD drafting experience, highly preferred.
- 3D modeling experience, preferred.
About The Site
The NNSA's Y-12 National Security Complex, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is the nation’s only source of enriched uranium nuclear weapon components and provides enriched uranium for the U.S. Navy as well as excels in materials science, precision manufacturing, and stores enriched uranium. Y-12 supports efforts to reduce nuclear proliferation risk and performs work for other government agencies
(energy.gov).
