Overview:
We are seeking an lnstrumentation and Controls Electrical Engineer in the Instrumentation and Controls Service (ICS) group within the Fabrication Instrumentation and Inspection Division (FIID). The successful applicant will serve as the ICS lead engineer and provide technical /quality oversight for instrumentation and control systems and related projects at ORNL and on the Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR). Working independently, they will solve technical issues as well as support projects and functions related to their EE role. The Electrical Engineer has technical oversight responsibility for design / inspection / management of control systems installation and operation, serve as the primary technical resource and Design Authority for issues related to electrical/electronic systems.
The ICS group ensures that the instrumentation and controls-based equipment used throughout the ORR is operational and can produce traceable data in a safe, reliable, and economical manner. ICS ensures systems are installed, inspected, calibrated, and maintained in accordance with environmental, safety, health, and quality requirements. Requirements could include but are not limited to DOE Price-Anderson Amendments Act (PAAA), ASE Nuclear Quality Assurance-1 (NQA-1), National Electric Code (NEC), Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICSI), or Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) compliance with UL508A or similar standards. Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL's) ability to apply and maintain compliance with these or similar requirements depend on the ability of ICS group to provide technical oversight.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The position has primary responsibility for instrumentation, controls, and system design, modification, fabrication, installation, oversight, acceptance testing, etc.

ICS Engineers must have and maintain an in-depth understanding of the technical aspects of the control systems for/which they are responsible.

Estimates costs related to design, material, and labor, and monitors projects to completion.

Hold an Electrical Equipment Inspector (EEI) role supporting ICS projects.

Maintain and continually improve maintenance systems and processes.

Coordinate projects with other internal resources for design, workflow, or repair.

Knowledge of standards, codes, and regulations with respect to electrical design, installation, and maintenance.

Basic Qualifications:

BS degree in electrical engineering or other relevant engineering degree from an accredited college or university

5-7 years of experience in facility systems, operations, and maintenance
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Experience in instrumentation design, complex control system maintenance, and electrical fabrication is a plus

The ability to understand and manage technical issues related to control systems and associated support systems

Knowledge of applicable codes and standards (NEC, UL508A, UL61010, ANSI, BICSI)

Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory

Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing customer needs.

Candidates should have strong computer skills, good interpersonal abilities, and good communication skills

Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
