Pay Range
$89,670 - $111,324 Annually for the G02.2 level
$107,550 - $133,524 Annually for the G02.3 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a
Graphic and Web Designer who will create complex visuals for a diverse range of communications products and media, with a major focus on supporting LLNL’s internal and external news platforms. We are looking for an exceptionally talented, creative and strategic graphic designer with relevant professional experience and solid skills in print, web design and graphics production. You will use your creative talents to create illustrations, graphics, publication layouts, web content, dynamic presentations, environmental design elements, branding and posters for technical and non-technical audiences. This position will be in the Technical Information Department matrixed to the Office of Strategic Communications in the Employee and Culture Communications group.
This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experiences as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities, outlined below, will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
You will
- Execute daily production for LLNL’s internal and external news platforms, including intaking and laying out news stories in the Lab’s news production tool, creating images for articles and updating news stories as needed in close partnership with the team’s editorial strategist. Please note this is a significant part of the role.
- Support production of LLNL’s SpotLight magazine, including creating production schedules, editing images, laying out the magazine for print and web and coordinating with the Lab’s print plant.
- Apply originality to produce and design multimedia projects using a variety of computer software and tools for print and web; meet standards for quality of work while maintaining design style and standards for projects.
- Interpret complex information and translate into clear, accurate, relevant and compelling products appropriate to the targeted audience(s) with an emphasis on developing impactful presentations and visual effectiveness.
- Collaborate and interact with all levels of administrative, management, scientific and technical staff, including other team members to understand, define, develop and establish design requirements for complex projects. Provide design consultation and carry out production assignments on web, print, multimedia and presentation projects.
- Contribute to the evaluation and implementation of new tools, technologies, concepts, and processes as they apply to various design projects; help develop process improvement methods; recommend appropriate media/display styles for content and test electronic materials on appropriate platforms and with appropriate software.
- Execute and coordinate production decisions on print, web, multimedia and/or presentation projects, oversee projects from conceptualization to completion, coordinate work with other team members, and choose appropriate work methods.
- Assist with establishing the creative direction for visual communication through researching, testing and presenting alternative approaches, methods and tools for management consideration.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Job Responsibilities At The G02.3 Level
- Evaluate progress of projects and results achieved; recommend and implement major changes to achieve overall objectives.
- Establish design best practices and present new trends, industry standards and capabilities; provide advanced-level input and recommendations.
- Guide direction and lead execution of complex visuals for a broad array of multimedia projects.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, multimedia, web design, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
- Ability to conceptualize and effectively design, plan, guide and coordinate production of multimedia design projects, including experience in establishing and maintaining design integrity throughout all media, publications and campaigns.
- In-depth knowledge of and experience with design methods and using software programs including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, XD) for print and digital production.
- Ability to design for web and advanced understanding of emerging design technologies.
- Knowledge of design accessibility standards and inclusive design.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team in a demanding environment.
- Problem solving and decision-making skills necessary to independently recommend appropriate actions and solutions.
- Experience working as a peer and consultant with subject matter experts and management.
In addition at the G02.3 level
- Demonstrated self-starter, comfortable multitasking with ability to work to deadlines and respond to tight schedules and attend to intense details with high consequence of error.
- Advanced technical knowledge and experience with highly specialized technical concepts, methods and techniques related to technical illustration, design and animation.
- Experience leading complex print and multimedia design projects and establishing commitments of cost, schedule, and quality. Ability to balance creative expertise with customer objectives and requirements.
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience working with Liferay, Drupal and WordPress.
- Experience applying UI/UX design principles to web layouts.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
