Pay Range
$132,816 - $204,636 Annually
$132,816 - $170,556 Annually for the SES.2 Level
$159,336 - $204,636 Annually for the SES.3 Level

Job Description
We have multiple openings for
Mechanical Engineers to participate in new and ongoing projects in support of making the world a safer place! We provide nuclear weapon engineering design expertise; systems engineering; experimental device design; shock & vibration, thermal testing; fabrication and assembly; and assessment of nuclear stockpile components for evaluation and maintenance of the enduring and future nuclear weapon stockpile. You will interface with colleagues at other National Laboratories and Production Agencies, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), and Department of Defense (DoD) and their contractors. These positions are in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate. DTED provides support to Strategic Deterrence Programs.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
- Derive engineering requirements, develop conceptual designs, and perform assessment of mechanical systems, test prototypes, and associated diagnostics, using comprehensive engineering knowledge and the broad application of technical concepts and techniques.
- Select methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to obtain results based on analysis of multiple, largely identifiable factors.
- Perform independent technical tasks to provide solutions for a diverse range of moderate to complex issues that require the creative use of established or innovative methods.
- Prepare documentation and lead portions of engineering design reviews.
- May represent the organization by providing input on technical issues for specific projects.
- May provide guidance and/or informal mentoring to less-experienced team members.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Job Responsibilities, At The SES.3 Level
- Provide technical expertise in complex mechanical and electromechanical design.
- Produce advanced conceptual and detail designs in support of on-going projects that require in-depth analysis and the creative use of established or innovative methods.
- Coordinate project interfaces and deployment interfacing with other organizations internal and external to the Laboratory and represent the organization as the primary technical contact on tasks and projects.
- Lead and/or provide guidance and technical direction to multidisciplinary project teams in a growing, dynamic environment.
Qualifications
- This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of engineering hardware design, fabrication, or testing processes and the ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
Additional Qualifications At The SES.3 Level
- Advanced knowledge of mechanical design.
- Significant experience in prototype development, hardware design and analysis, or mechanical testing.
- Significant experience in managing, overseeing, and delivering multiple projects on budget and schedule.
- Ability to lead, manage, and mentor junior team members.
- Advanced communication skills with proven ability to present concepts and ideas in a clear and coherent manner, both verbal and written for presentation and interaction with other technical staff members.
Qualifications We Desire
- Master's degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Advanced knowledge of systems engineering principles and practices and their application.
- Familiarity with the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
- Familiarity with weapon design or defense contractor hardware based programs.
