The Y‑12 National Security Complex located in Oak Ridge, TN, plays a vital role in the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Nuclear Security Enterprise. Y-12 provides manufacturing, technical, and scientific expertise to produce components, subassemblies, and quality evaluations to sustain a U.S. nuclear deterrent; reduce the threat from weapons of mass destruction; supply nuclear material to the Naval Reactors Program; and provide solutions to other emerging national security challenges. Y-12 has developed state-of-the-art capabilities in three core areas: nuclear technology and materials, security and consequence management, and manufacturing and technical services. Y-12 lends its specialized expertise to other federal agencies, such as the U.S. Departments of Defense (DOD) and Homeland Security, state and local governments, and private-sector companies. Projects at Y-12 include providing protective equipment to soldiers in combat, training National Guard units for radiological emergencies, and creating machining platforms that improve production and efficiency.

Responsibilities
The responsibilities for the design engineers are:
- Provide Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS), Mission Engineering with full time HVAC engineering support for facility and production area activities in Cat 2/Nuclear facilities.
- Provide design output documentation to support minor facility modifications. The types of design output documents typically developed by an HVAC design engineer within the Mission Engineering organization are flow diagrams, installation drawings, data sheets, equipment specifications, equivalency evaluations, calculations, etc.
- Works with other engineering disciplines and other plant organizations to produce timely design output.
- Have a working knowledge of Industrial Ventilation Design and be familiar with national codes and standards applicable to the design of nuclear confinement ventilation systems such as:
- American Society of Mechanical Engineers - ASME AG-1.
- American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers - ASHRAE DG-1.
- American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists - ACGIH Industrial Ventilation Manual.
- DOE Nuclear Air Cleaning Handbook, etc.
Requirements
- Requires an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredited Bachelor of Science degree in an Engineering discipline, plus 10 or more years of relevant professional experience or a Master of Science degree in a relevant Engineering discipline.
- Must be US citizen.
- Successful drug screening.
- Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a security or clearance badge.
Preferred Qualifications
- Preferred Q – Clearance.
- Extensive experience with the design and operation of nuclear confinement ventilation systems including laboratory hoods, gloveboxes, enclosures for DOE nuclear facilities.
- Experience in a Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) or DOE regulated environment is desirable. Requires an understanding of Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Operations, Conduct of Maintenance for facilities operating within a nuclear regulated environment.
- Requires strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interface effectively with various clients, production and support organizations, management, and hourly wage employees. Must be willing to work in a production environment.
Location/Work Arrangement:
- This position a fully onsite position at Y-12 in Oak Ridge, TN.
