What You'll Do
As the Fire Protection Chief Engineer you will provide leadership, guidance, and technical direction to Fire protection engineers, other fire protection personnel, senior plant leadership, customers and engineering groups concerning critical facility engineering issues. You will assist in developing program and project requirements to ensure compliance with governmental, consensus code, or procedural requirements. Leading continuous improvement on departmental technical processes and procedures. You will be the technical program owner for the site fire protection program. The principal responsibility for the Chief Fire Protection Engineer is to support the safe operation and management of United States Department of Energy (DOE) sites under the management of the M&O contractor.
Responsibilities include:
- Determining applicability, providing final CNS interpretation, and evaluating, authorizing, and documenting de minimus deviations of the NFPA codes and standards, IBC and IFC to site activities and addressing through the Code of Record process as required.
- Evaluating implementation of DOE orders such as DOE Order 420.1C and DOE-STD-1066.
- Ensuring that CAHJ activities these are properly documented
- Performing work requiring advanced understanding and application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the engineering field.
- Interfacing with other related disciplines and understanding how those disciplines interface with systems.
- Representing Y-12 in discussing complex issues with National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB).
- Be knowledgeable of Fire Protection industry and regulatory standards as well as criteria pertinent to design engineering for United States Department of Energy (USDOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and have working knowledge of ASME Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1).
- Be knowledgeable of fire protection systems including inspection, testing and maintenance.
- Have familiarity with safety basis development and implementation.
- Performing technical reviews with comments on design documents and specifications for construction.
- Preparing (or direct the preparation of) project studies and reports.
- Performing other responsibilities as assigned.
Candidate must have:
- Proficient oral and written communication skills with the ability to conduct presentations to senior level executives, governmental customers, engineering groups, or other groups is a requirement.
- Excellent time management, mentoring, listening, and critical thinking skills.
- Basic familiarity with Emergency Response Operations and fire department organizational structure, response capability and equipment.

Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Science or engineering (BS) with 20-years (minimum) experience in Fire Protection analysis and design or
- Master’s degree in Fire Protection Science or engineering (MS) with 18-years (minimum) experience in Fire Protection analysis and design or
- Doctorate degree in Fire Protection Science or engineering (PhD) with 12-years (minimum) experience in Fire Protection analysis and design.
- And with at least 6-years (minimum) of this experience in working in the nuclear industry and 7-years (minimum) experience in engineering management or oversight.
- Excellent communications and interpersonal skills required. The selected candidate must be comfortable working in a high visibility environment requiring high levels of autonomy, flexibility, and responsiveness to customer needs. The candidate must have a proven track record of successful customer and executive leadership interaction.
- Degree(s) from programs recognized and accredited by: The Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
Preferred Job Requirements
