Pay Range
$107,550 - $133,524 Annually
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a
Communications Specialist to support internal communications for LLNL’s Human Resources (HR) Directorate. In this role, you will support a Lab-wide transformation initiative, working closing with subject matter experts to convey complex details in an easy-to-understand manner. As a key contributor to change management communications, you will provide internal audiences with clarity on process improvement efforts, while anticipating questions. You will partner with the HR Communications Manager in building a communications strategy and framework, a go-to-market style communications plan, and a detailed timeline to correlate with the overall project plan. Additionally, as a trusted advisor and partner in your field, you will provide senior leadership guidance and recommendations on communications best practices. This position is in the Technical Information Department and will be matrixed to the Human Resources Directorate.
This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.
You will
- Develop original content, provide writing and editing services, and collaborate with both communications and workforce teams on the production of templates, documents, digital tools, and graphics to support change management communications, gaining appropriate approvals throughout the process.
- Serve as a quality check with designers, web developers, or multimedia professionals to ensure all production assignments meet determined goals and requirements.
- Serve as project manager for numerous deliverables, keeping team lead and stakeholders up to date. Establish commitments to project objectives, standards of quality, and timeline.
- Collaborate with a diverse range of LLNL staff members at all levels to support the Laboratory and its communications needs. May serve as committee-chair on project sub-committees.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts and multidisciplinary teams (editorial, design, web, and/or visualization) to coordinate production and maintenance of communications products, graphic assets and websites.
- Identify process improvements and enhance existing internal communication vehicles and make recommendations for new programs, tactics, and tools.
- Partner with communications manager to develop and implement communications plans and schedules for complex projects or campaigns. Serve as main point of contact on project status and develop communications conveying project updates.
- Provide oversight, coordinate tasks, and derive content on communications projects of varying complexity, often with a teams of subject matter experts, stakeholders, creative staff, and/or vendors.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, media relations, change management, project management or the equivalent combination of education and experience in communications.
- Significant experience as a writer/editor, planning, developing, and writing content effectively across various types of communication platforms, including web, digital, and print; Advanced knowledge in the theory and techniques of high-quality communication practices and standards and knowledge of and experience using editorial style conventions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with a drive for quality control and excellence.
- In-depth experience as a self-starter, comfortable multitasking with ability to work to deadlines and respond to tight, shifting schedules, including effective interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
- In-depth experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams) and familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud software (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) and Atlassian suite (Jira, Confluence). Knowledge of content management systems such as Drupal and/or WordPress.
- Significant project management experience leading complex, multi-functional communication projects with multiple technical groups in order to translate and develop communication materials that are easily understood across diverse audiences.
- Significant experience establishing commitments of cost, schedule, and quality.
- Significant experience collaborating with senior managers, clients, team members, peers, and stakeholders to meet organizational/ programmatic objectives.
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience with change management communications.
- Experience in public relations or employee relations.
- Experience in marketing or branding. Experience developing communications for HR, recruiting, or employee/workforce relations.
- Experience working with graphic designers and/or applying design principles to visualize content for different campaigns, platforms, and audiences. Familiarity with design principles, data visualization, and visual communication techniques.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.

Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval.
