Pay Range
$39.98 - $49.65 Hourly for the 533.2 level
$47.93 - $59.49 Hourly for the 533.3 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have multiple openings for
Mechanical Technologists/Senior Mechanical Technologists to provide technical support in the pulsed power field. You will provide technical support for experimental research, prototype equipment, custom diagnostic sensor development, installation of complex high-voltage, high-current; explosive pulse power research, and development projects. These positions are in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.
This position will be filled at either level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities, outlined below, will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
You will
- Design, fabricate, maintain, assemble, and disassemble moderately complex mechanical components and systems. This includes planning, selecting material, equipment, and determining solutions.
- Work from drawings, and verbal instructions to assemble, and test various mechanical designs.
- Provide general technical support applying fundamental knowledge to engineers and senior level technical staff for preparing and coordinating laboratory experiments.
- Machine components using conventional lathe, mill, and other manufacturing process machines.
- Apply a fundamental knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes to solve a variety of mechanical problems.
- Set up equipment, provide general troubleshooting, maintenance, and minor modifications of moderately complex hardware including pressure and vacuum systems.
- Maintain a high level of safety awareness, while working in the laboratories.
- Conduct routine safety inspections and audits of the laboratories with an emphasis on housekeeping.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Job Responsibilities, At The 533.3 Level
- Design, fabricate, assemble, and disassemble complex mechanical components and systems following work control and procedure requirements including high vacuum systems.
- Perform vacuum leak checking using leak detection equipment.
- Maintain system documentation and experimental records.
- Follow and adhere to written, operational, and safety procedures while completing job assignments and ensure that support and experimental areas are kept clean, uncluttered, and in a state of readiness.
- Perform work from drawings and verbal/written instructions to assemble and test various mechanical designs under minimal supervision.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Associate degree in an engineering technology such as mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Intermediate skills and understanding of machine tool technology and operation of conventional machine tools, and inspection techniques.
- Intermediate technical skills and knowledge of engineering principles to solve problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
- Experience designing moderately complex mechanical components and systems.
- Intermediate knowledge of high-pressure systems.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain documentation relating to experimental assemblies.
- Demonstrated effective verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
- Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and can multitask priorities.
- Proficient with the use of CAD software package (Solid Works or Pro E) to produce 3D models and generate 2D detailed drawings for fabrication.
- Ability to travel domestically for offsite experimental test campaigns.
Additional Qualifications At The 533.3 Level
- Advanced understanding of machine tool technology with experience using high level precision metrology tooling, micrometers, and digital height gages.
- Advanced technical skills and knowledge of engineering principles to solve complex technical problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
- Ability to conceptualize, design, develop and implement complex hardware in support of programmatic experimental equipment.
- Ability to train others and provide technical direction to team members.

Security Clearance
