Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a
Mechanical Engineer and join our team located in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Responsibilities
Candidate will be in the Packaging Engineering organization and serve as a Cognizant Engineer responsible for the Type B packaging fleet used at WIPP. Candidate will interface with fabrication sub-contractors, quality assurance, waste handling personnel at the WIPP Site and generator sites relative to the use, handling, and operations of select Type A payload containers as well as the Type B packaging fleet. The candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining fabrication specifications, drawings, H&O manuals, and Type A Evaluation Reports for the payload containers. The candidate will also be responsible for ensuring containers are fabricated in accordance with approved drawings and specifications. The candidate will also be involved with developing and maintaining ancillary equipment associated with the operation of the payload containers.
A successful candidate will possess/develop working knowledge of the following:
- 49 CFR 178.350, Specification 7A; General Packaging, Type A
- ASME Section V Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, Nondestructive Examination
- ASME Section IX Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, Qualification Standard for Welding and Brazing Procedures, Welders, Brazers and Welding and Brazer Operators
- ASME B30.20, Below-the-hook Lifting Devices
- ASME BTH-1, Design of Below-the-hook Lifting Devices
- ASME NQA-1, 1989 Edition (or newer), Quality Assurance Program Requirements for Nuclear Facilities
- AWS D1.1, Structural Welding Code – Steel
Minimum Requirements

Education And Experience
- Master’s degree in a technical field with three (3) years of technical experience, or
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field with five (5) years of technical experience, or
- Associate's degree with nine (9) years of technical experience, or
- High School Diploma or Equivalency with thirteen (13) years of job-related technical experience is required.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without SIMCO visa sponsorship now or in the future.
- Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the WIPP Site (even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge).
- Non-U.S. citizens from countries identified by the Department of Energy as posing heightened security concerns—including sensitive countries, state sponsors of terrorism, countries of risk, and other designated countries –are subject to additional security requirements that limit site access.
Definition Of Experience
- Experience must include some manufacturing technology (including welding) and working under a quality assurance program.
Preferred Requirements
- Previous experience working at WIPP or other DOE sites.
- Previous experience working in fabrication.
- Previous experience in interpretation and application of consensus standards such as ASME B30.20, BTH-1, BPV Section IX, ASTM Material Specifications and ANSI standards in a manufacturing environment focusing on compliance with procurement and design specifications.
- Three (3) years of project management experience is desired along with knowledge of DOT packaging requirements.
Salary Range
$105,312 to $201,044 per year. Exempt grade level(s) 33-36. The specific salary offered to a candidate will be influenced by a variety of factors, particularly the candidate’s relevant experience and education.
