Job Summary
RSI is seeking a Senior Level Nuclear Non-Proliferation Subject Matter Expert (SME). The SME will serve as a senior technical authority supporting an independent evaluation of advanced nuclear program initiatives, specifically focused on proliferation resistance optimization within reactor and fuel cycle systems.
The SME will participate in a focused, in-person technical program review at ORNL or Y‑12, providing expert analysis, evaluation, and recommendations regarding the technical state, integration approach, and effectiveness of the program of interest.
This position requires nationally recognized expertise and the ability to deliver independent, defensible, and actionable technical assessments aligned with DOE/NNSA mission objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in an in-person technical program review at designated locations (ORNL or Y‑12)
- Evaluate the technical state and maturity of the program of interest, including integration of proliferation resistance into reactor and fuel cycle design
- Assess program performance relative to mission objectives, safety considerations, and nonproliferation goals
- Identify and document strengths, weaknesses, risks, and improvement opportunities
- Provide structured evaluations of program integration across reactor core, fuel, and auxiliary systems
- Prepare written technical feedback and recommendations for program leadership
- Contribute to development of a formal technical assessment report summarizing findings and recommendations
- Serve as an independent advisor, offering objective, expert judgment on complex technical issues
- Coordinate with program stakeholders to clarify technical assumptions and validate findings.
Requirements And Education - Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or related technical discipline
- Minimum 25 years of directly relevant experience in nuclear systems, national security programs, or related fields
- Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following:
- Nuclear reactor system design or analysis
- Fuel cycle technologies
- Proliferation resistance / nonproliferation engineering
- DOE/NNSA program evaluation or technical oversight
- Proven ability to perform independent technical assessments and program evaluations
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills
- Ability to deliver clear, concise, and actionable recommendations for senior leadership.
Preferred Requirements And Education
- Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or related field
- Prior experience supporting DOE/NNSA programs, particularly at national laboratories or production facilities
- Experience participating in or leading independent technical reviews or peer review panels
- Familiarity with proliferation resistance frameworks and reactor system integration approaches
- Demonstrated recognition as a technical authority or industry expert
