The Senior Security Officer provides leadership, direction, mentorship, and training to security officers in the assigned shifts. They ensure all aspects of security and protective services for Smith+Nephew employees and property.

What will you be doing?
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Lead work of security officers assigned to the shift. Train officers as to general and shift-specific responsibilities.
- Respond to reports of emergency, unusual, and/or unsafe situations. Evaluate, determine, and implement appropriate actions to be taken, and advise key personnel as appropriate.
- Issue employee parking hangtags and maintain computer log of parking program.
- Issue security proximity access cards/badges and maintain computer control system.
- Review, compile, report, and maintain security officer paperwork. Maintain inventory of security equipment and supplies.
- Assist with planning and execution of Smith & Nephew events. Coordinate access to buildings, advising people and traffic to accurate location.
- Institute standard safety precautions.
- Assist in identifying the best methodologies for securing Smith & Nephew’s property. Monitor and troubleshoot access control systems and resolve physical security failures with external vendors and Smith & Nephew Building Maintenance Department.
- Assist with coordinating shift coverage for unexpected absences.

Assists in training and supervision of duties performed by guard force.
Projects as assigned by Security Supervisor.
For Internal and External Relationships:
Internal contacts will extend from hourly staff to upper management. External contacts will include various vendors and professionals.
For Organization Influence:
Scope of responsibility will be Smith & Nephew in Memphis.
What will you need to be successful?
Education:
- Associate’s degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice or related field or two years related experience required.
Certifications:
- Must be able to be bonded and commissioned.
- Must complete training for registration with the State of Tennessee as an armed security officer/guard.
- Must be able to be certified in CPR and first aid.
- Must meet qualifications as an applicant for registration with the State of Tennessee as an armed security officer/guard.
- Continuing education courses may be required to keep abreast of current security procedures.
Experience:
- One (1) year law enforcement, security or related professional experience required.
Languages:
- Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge:
- Working knowledge of corporate security investigative techniques and procedures; laws of arrest and seizure; rules of evidence and court procedures; legal rights of citizens.
- Skill and proficiency in typing is preferred, but not mandatory.
Competences:
- Candidates can have no criminal convictions (misdemeanor or felony). Minor traffic violations are not applicable.
- Must have valid driver’s license and maintain same and be able to drive the company vehicles.
- Must attend departmental in-service meetings as required.
- Must be willing to take a polygraph test as requested.
- Must be willing to submit to random drug screens. Drug testing will be done a minimum of four times per year.
- Must successfully complete a written psychological evaluation as well as an evaluation by a licensed psychologist.
- During the first ninety days of employment the officer must be able to score 85 % or better on a 50-round weapons course.
- In addition to the state training, the officer must successfully complete 80 hours of intensive company-sponsored firearms training. Passing score during the qualification round is 85%. The scoring is done on a 50-round course. Course of fire ranges from distances of 3 to 50 feet. The course must be completed within the first ten monthes of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Officers must also complete an 80-hour, company-sponsored, physical fitness training program. Officers must successfully complete each of the following regimens:
- 30 push-ups in 60 seconds
- 30 sit-ups in 60 seconds
- Bench press 75% of body weight @ 10 repetititons in 1 minute.
- ½ mile run in 5 minutes.
Quarterly testing will be conducted in order to ensure that the officers are able to maintain the minimum fitness standards.

- Lifting more than 100 pounds up to 1/3 of the time
- Vision: close (clear vision at 20 inches or less); Distance Vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); Color Vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); Peripheral Vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point); Depth Perception (three-dimensional vision. ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); Ability to Adjust Focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus)
