Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a
Environmental, Safety and Health Technician - Trainee and join our team located in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
This position works with a team that is cross-trained, as best as possible, in all activities responsible for environmental monitoring, land management, and site environmental compliance.
This is a USW bargaining unit position. This position will be filled with SIMCO USW membership first in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement before any other candidate considerations.
Responsibilities
- All surface repository and underground repository VOC sampling according to Permit Part 4 and Attachment N and N1. Paperwork that goes with the sampling program. Prepares samples for delivery through the warehouse to an outside laboratory. Maintains sampling equipment. Prepares sampling equipment for sampling and breaks down sampling equipment for transport to the laboratory.
- Requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
- Radiological Worker II (RAD-201) qualified.
- Forklift operator qualified (SAF-120).
- Satellite Accumulation Area Custodian qualified (SAA-01).
- Hazardous Waste Worker qualification (HWW101).
- Water Sampler 1 certification (NMED certification).
- Pick up recycling in town and returns recycling to the site.
- Take pallets to Lovington for recycling.
- Does all monthly pond inspections for liner integrity, leak detection system readings, and erosion.
- Pumps water from ponds and sumps for the DP-831 permit.
- Pumps water from the collections tanks that leak from the ventilation duct work.
- Measures water levels in all ponds for DP-831 permit.
- Manages all water generated from underground and surface that requires sampling and disposal.
- Manages water basin collecting water leaking from the ventilation duct work.
- Takes water samples for chorine and coliform from sinks at the site.
- Mows and maintains three lay down yards at the site.
- Performs SAA Inspections when needed.
- Helps SEC by moving waste and transferring waste from container to container.
- Pumps brine from containers and transfers to EP H-19.
- Assists SEC in sampling waste when needed.
Other Work Scope To Be Cross Trained In
- All sampling includes field paperwork, packaging samples for laboratory and delivery to laboratory.
- Low-volume air particulate sampling, weighing, packaging for the lab, chain-of custody, and laboratory delivery.
- Biotic sampling (fauna): Quail, roadkill (deer, Javalina, cotton tail rabbit, cattle). All opportunistic sampling except quail.
- Biotic sampling (fish): Catfish (two species) along the Pecos River as far north as Artesia, through Carlsbad, and terminating in Malaga.
- Biotic sampling (Flora): vegetation sampling co-located with 7 low-volume air particulate samplers.
- Surface Water and Sediment Sampling: sampling of cattle watering tanks.
- Soil sampling: soil sampling co-located with 7 low-volume air particulate samplers.
- Meteorological Tower Inspections: visual inspections of Met tower for instrumentation damage or malfunction.
- Sewage Lagoon and infiltration control sampling: sampling and analysis of all ponds at the site and sewage lagoons.
- Oil and Gas Surveillance: Inspect oil and gas operations along the border of the 16 sections for spills. Also inspection and confirm locations of new oil and/or gas well drilling operations.
- Land Management: Manage the land within the 16 sections. Includes fence repair, signage, maintenance of the access roads of debris and trash, mowing the shoulders of the access roads, helping ranchers recover cattle that may have crossed the fences.
- Drinking water Sampling.
- Takes urine samples to the WIPP lab for analysis.
- Takes Lo-Vol filters to WIPP Labs.
Minimum Requirements

- High school graduate or equivalency is required.
- One (1) year site experience.
Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Trainee pay rate is $36.86 per hour. After all standard qualifications have been met and are maintained, the rate of pay is $47.42 with an annual increase in August to $48.61 (2026) per the CBA.
