Overview:
The Web Services Group in the Information Technology Services Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is hiring a WordPress developer to advance ORNL’s mission and support Department of Energy partner organizations!
ORNL is the largest of 17 US DOE science and energy laboratories conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Typical projects to be supported range from marketing sites to complex, data-driven websites for a large enterprise environment (7000+ employees).
- Ability to work on multiple sites and with multiple customers over a sprint.
- Ability to work independently while managing time effectively.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and switch quickly and comfortably between projects.
- Understanding of the software development lifecycle from requirements gathering through production implementation.
- Be a contributing and supportive member of the WordPress team.
- Monitor and fix performance and platform related bugs as they emerge.
- Play an active role in creating standard solutions, CI/CD strategy, and maintaining related infrastructure processes for the organization.

Basic Qualifications:
- BS in computer science, information technology, business, graphic design, marketing, or a related field of study and 5-7 years of WordPress development is required. An overall combination of equivalent experience may also be considered.
- Broad understanding of the WordPress Content Management system, including core functionality and structure.
- Skilled with PHP and understanding its role in the WordPress platform.
- Proficiency with HTML and CSS and its role in creating consistent and scalable style across the sites and the development of design systems.
- Experience working in an Agile organization and on a scrum team.
- Experience in web accessibility policy, concepts, and implementation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Motivated self-starter who can work independently and participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
- Experience developing custom themes and plugins.
- Skilled in using and configuring the Gutenberg editor experience.
- Working knowledge of:
- Git and file repo management.
- Task runners such as Grunt/Gulp and NPM.
- Relational database structure and concepts.
- Knowledge of software development life cycle strategy, including analysis, system design, prototype development, testing, and quality assurance.
- Practical knowledge of User Experience and User Interface (UX/UI) concepts and design.
- Fundamental understanding of JavaScript and its role in user interface development.
- Understanding of CLI programming
- Understanding of CI/CD processes and its role in software development life cycle.
Special Requirements:
- Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
