The expected hiring range for this position is:
$34.24-$41.76.

About the Role:
Fermilab is seeking a Lead Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic to schedule, lead, and inspect the repair and maintenance activities for all Laboratory vehicles or equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation and conformance with federal and state environmental and safety requirements.
What your day-to-day as the Lead Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic at Fermilab will look like:
- Scheduling and leading daily repairs and preventive vehicle maintenance activities, devises and implementing maintenance schedules for all Laboratory vehicles or equipment, inspecting work performed to ensure jobs are completed in a satisfactory manner, and ensuring conformance with federal and state environmental and safety requirements.
- Ensuring an adequate and appropriate stock of frequently used mechanical and electrical vehicular parts for service/repair will be maintained and available on hand.
- Maintaining required service/repair/ordering documentation. Completing and filing and submitting all necessary reports.
- Performing routine and preventive service/maintenance on Laboratory vehicles or equipment and trailer systems including, but not limited to, engine, ignition, fuel, electrical, hydraulic, heating/ cooling, transmission, brake, and lubrication.
- Analyzing reported problems in various systems. Performing tests, diagnoses, and correcting/repairing operating problems. Dismantling and rebuilding as needed. Repairing/replacing individual parts and providing in-field repair services as necessary.
- Assisting less experienced Vehicle and Equipment Mechanics in diagnosing and correcting complex and/or unusual problems.
- Recommending placement of certain types of repair work with outside vendors; reviews and accepts completed repair work before returning vehicle or equipment to service.
- May lead the activities of a group or project.
- Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Abiding by and being responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health, and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
Minimum Required Education and Experience:
- Two years of automotive technical school
- 5+ years of hands-on experience
- OR High School diploma with 10+ years of experience.
Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:
- Possesses a valid Commercial Driver's License A or B without air brake restriction, as needed in area of assignment.
- Expert in the methods, procedures, tools, and equipment used to perform an assigned brake service or inspection task.
- Ability to perform the assigned brake service or inspection by reason of experience, training, or both as follows:
- Has successfully completed an apprenticeship program sponsored by a State, a Canadian Province, a federal agency or a labor union, or a training program approved by a State, Provincial, or Federal agency.
- Or has a state or Canadian province certificate that qualifies the person to perform the assigned brake service or inspection task (including passing the Commercial Driver's License air brake tests in the case of a brake inspection).
- Or Has brake-related training, experience, or a combination totaling at least one year.
