Overview:
We are seeking a Cooling Systems Engineer who will function within the Cooling Systems group to achieve engineering design tasks and concurrently monitor operating systems. This position resides in the Cooling Systems Group in the Site Services Group, Research Accelerator Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Provide engineering support for Cooling Systems equipment and projects.
- Perform hydraulic analysis using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to understand performance limitations in existing systems, design new systems, and select equipment.
- Provide design support for Cooling Systems (e.g. piping, pumps, water chemistry) in accordance with the design change procedure.
- Provide engineering support to technicians, engineers, and subcontractor personnel within guidelines established by SNS Research Accelerator Division, SNS, and ORNL policies.
- Provide input and assist in maintaining procedures for operation and maintenance.
- Evaluate data generated from the facility data monitoring software to make recommendations for improved design or operational practices.
- Participate in operational coordination to facilitate design change implementation and routine maintenance tasks.
- Independently monitor Cooling Systems operations and give direction to qualified system operators to alter parameters to establish the intended operational condition and achieve SNS production goals.
- Report observed operational issues to Senior Operator, or other qualified operators and the Group Leader.
- In this role you will be expected to be willing to learn new skills and train others.
- The SNS and HFIR facilities are in operation 24 hours per day and 7 days a week year-round. You may be occasionally required to support users and/or facilities during off hours or weekends.

Basic Qualifications:
- A BS degree in mechanical engineering or related field with five or more years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with industrial equipment including pumps, valves, piping, control systems, water chemistry, etc.
- Experience with computerized analysis techniques.
- Experience with AFT Fathom Fluid Dynamic Software.
- Competence in Affinity Laws.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
- For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required.
- Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
- To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
For foreign national candidates:
- If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment.
- Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
