The Spallation Neutron Source at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a Research Mechanic Trainee - Electrical to work with limited supervision to provide technical support for assembly, testing, installation, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of SNS technical systems. Support staff in programs to improve the operational performance and reliability of technical components and systems necessary for neutron production and utilization. Successful candidates will have experience in electrical / electronic or radio-frequency systems and their operation. This position resides in the Electrical Systems Group in the Research Accelerator Division of the Neutron Sciences Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Electrical Systems Group is responsible for providing hands-on electrical support and technical knowledge to accelerator and instrument systems groups at the Spallation Neutron Source.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Works with technical and scientific staff in a team-oriented environment.
- Participates in assembly, testing, installation, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of technical electrical equipment, hardware and systems.
- Provides technical input on the repair and development of troubleshooting and maintenance procedures for electrical equipment, components and technical systems.
- Provides technical input for system and component design with emphasis on operational performance and reliability. May use computers, dataloggers or other recording test equipment to collect and record data.
- Maintains qualification for and follow Lock, Tag, and Verify procedures to control hazardous energy.
- Maintains qualifications as a Qualified Electrical Worker.
- Follows all required safety procedures and utilizes personnel protective equipment (PPE) as needed. Maintains required radiation worker training including respirator wearer.
- Provides occasional technical support outside of normal work hours to maintain operational readiness. Maintains strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of positive values and ethics.
- Ensures and monitors compliance issues in the following areas: Integrated Safety Management Systems (ISMS), Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and Quality Assurance (QA).

Basic Qualifications:
- Must have attained journeyman craft level either through completing a recognized apprenticeship program or by obtaining an associate degree in the electrical/electronic field. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Must have a minimum of five years of journeyman-level experience in the electrical and/or electronic disciplines.
- Working knowledge of engineering drawings and electrical drawings and electronic schematics.
- Knowledge of testing, installation, and operation of electrical distribution components such as motor control centers, variable frequency drives, UPS systems, and emergency generator systems.
- Knowledge of the operation and use of electronic test equipment, including multimeters, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, pulse and function generators, power supplies, etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in assembly, installation, troubleshooting and operations of technical systems supporting a research environment.
- Direct experience working on accelerator systems such as vacuum, magnets, cooling water, power distribution, power supplies, beam diagnostics, radio frequency, electronics, fiber optics, PLC controls, instrumentation, and or cryogenics.
- Experience working as a member of an operations and maintenance team.
- Knowledge of installation and testing of PLC systems and field instrumentation.
- Proficiency in performing multi-craft tasks.
- Capable of working with scientists, engineers, and technicians and following verbal and/or written instructions.
- Good verbal and written communications skills.
- Record of excellent attendance and safe work practices.
- Good basic math skills.
- Proficient computer skills such as sending and receiving email, searching for information in support of assigned tasks and entering data and notes related to equipment.
Special Requirements:
- Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
