Overview:
We are seeking a Senior Electrical CADD Designer who will focus on producing designs, and engineering drawings using computer-aided design (MicroStation/AutoCAD) packages for modifications to reactor systems, support systems, cryogenic cold source systems, and provides technical support for related maintenance activities.
This position resides in the Systems Engineering Group in the Research Reactors Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Systems Engineering Group is responsible for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) configuration management program, provides technical support to operations and maintenance, and performs systems analysis.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Leads the creation and revision of designs for complex reactor electrical equipment, ensuring alignment with project requirements and industry standards.
- Prepares and reviews detailed engineering drawings using MicroStation and AutoCAD, ensuring accuracy and consistency across projects.
- Proactively identifies and resolves complex electrical design issues in collaboration with system engineers and cross-functional teams.
- Supports the Design Basis Group lead with strategic group-level initiatives and process improvements.
- Develops and validates wiring diagrams, schematics, electrical installation drawings and specifications.
- Delivers clear, complete, and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches, electronic databases, or written or verbal instructions.
- Drives project success by meeting or exceeding milestones set by RRD management, including budget and schedule targets.
- Partners with Design Basis Group lead to ensure accurate, timely, and professional designs and drawings.
- Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements including ISMS.

Basic Qualifications:
- An AS degree in an engineering related field with a minimum of 10 years of experience in and drafting support of complex multi-discipline systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Expert in AutoCAD or MicroStation software.
- Ability to produce electrical design drawings and manipulate scanned images.
- Proficiency with:
- Electrical control and protection devices and their circuitry
- National Electrical Code (NEC) symbols and nomenclature used in schematics, plans, substructure maps, specifications, wiring diagrams, and electrical design drawings.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a nuclear reactor environment.
Special Requirements:
- Export Control: This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
- This position requires Rad Worker II.
- Visa Sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
- For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required.
- Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
- To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
For foreign national candidates:
- If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment.
- Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
