ABOUT THE ROLE:
Fermilab seeks an Accelerator Controls Operations Research Network (ACORN) Project Manager. Reporting to the Deputy Director for Projects and Engineering, the ACORN Project Manager is responsible for the successful execution of the project in accordance with the requirements of the Department of Energy and Fermilab project management practices, and for meeting the established goals for technical, cost, schedules, safety and environmental performance. The Project Manager leads the programmatic leadership, strategic planning, and general oversight of the project and serves as the primary point of contact to external stakeholders and collaborators.
What your day-to-day as ACORN Project Manager at Fermilab will look like:
- Provides leadership, management, and strategic vision to execute the ACORN project.
- Assures safe and secure execution of the project.
- Ensures delivery of the project scope and final acceptance of all ACORN deliverables.
- Develops and maintains strong working relationships with DOE, Fermilab leadership, and external institutions to ensure alignment of goals.
- Plans and executes the project to meet cost, schedule, and technical performance objectives, including exercising authority to commit and allocate resources.
- Closely coordinates with the DOE High Energy Physics program and Fermi Site Office on all aspects of planning, budgeting, execution, and reporting.
- Leads management of ACORN interfaces, both technical and organizational, to the Accelerator Directorate organizations and systems, to other projects such as LBNF/DUNE, PIP-II, and to Accelerator Complex evolution efforts.
- Leads project workforce planning to ensure the skills, capabilities and capacity are in place to achieve project goals.
- Develops a culture of trust and accountability to create a project environment that attracts talent and optimizes team members’ abilities to contribute.
- Represents ACORN to the broader physics community.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Abides by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
Skills and Attributes for Success:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or a related field or equivalent experience and 10+ years of experience; or equivalent. Advanced degree highly preferred.
Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Leadership experience overseeing large, technically complex projects.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively discuss, influence, partner with, and present to all levels of the organization.
- Solid interpersonal skills to effectively build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong ability to negotiate mutually beneficial outcomes, manage conflict, and motivate others to action.
- Demonstrated ability to maneuver through complex policy, process and people-related organizational dynamics.
- Experience ensuring technical, cost, schedule, safety, and environmental performance on major projects.
- Ability to interpret and apply understanding of key financial measures, analyze data and situations, develop and evaluate effective options, and make quality decisions.
- Experience with DOE project management systems.
- Familiarity with accelerator controls systems.
- Commitment to safety, quality and collaboration.

- Onsite: This is an onsite role, and the candidate must be able to work from our Batavia office.
