Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Responsibilities
Occupational Safety is looking for a high performing individual with an attention to detail to join our team as a Safety Specialist I. This position will be responsible for providing safety support within the Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) Occupational Safety & Industrial Hygiene (OS&IH) Division.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with conducting studies and making recommendations related to potential or actual accident occurrences and hazards and the MSTS Accident Prevention Program.
- Responsible for providing safety support within the Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) Occupational Safety & Industrial Hygiene (OS&IH) Division.
- Provides PULSE support construction of assigned projects, UCEP, ASD, MSTS and subcontract construction activities and other duties as assigned.
- Support the PULSE Work Planning Center.
- Conduct walkdowns and work package reviews and provide oversite of work performance including off shift and non-standard work shifts if needed - (Backshift).
- Responsible for administering and enforcing the Occupational Safety program for underground operations to include construction, maintenance and experimentation activities.
- Conduct studies and make recommendations related to potential or actual accident occurrences and hazards and the MSTS Accident Prevention Program.
- Assist higher level Safety Professionals:
- In the development and implementation of methods for accident prevention.
- Inspecting work sites to identify potential or existing job hazards.
- Investigating accidents, including those involving vehicles, to determine relevant causes.
- Serve as a communication point for occupational safety requirements and practices as assigned.
- Maintain awareness of current additions or revisions to safety codes and standards and applies to work responsibilities as necessary.
- Ensure timely and orderly completion of inspections, investigations or reports.
- Accept individual responsibility and accountability for environment, safety, health, and quality processes within personal control, personal safety, and the safety of co-workers.
- Comply with established regulations and procedures for environment, safety, health, and quality and perform duties in a way that will not cause personal danger, endanger other individuals, or violate environment, safety, health, and quality regulations.
- Promptly correct or report any hazard or potential hazard to supervision.
- Participate in and embrace MSTS environment, safety, health, and quality initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety or related field equivalent training and experience.
- Must be able to work in an underground setting.
- Attention to detail and high degree of accuracy required in writing technical documents and ensuring all company policies and procedures are followed.
- Mut be highly organized and able to prioritize and schedule multiple activities in the organizational unit.
- Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with all types of people in a tactful, professional, and effective manner while screening and maintaining confidentiality.
- Able to remember extensive policies, procedures, terminology, schedules, personnel, and other details.
- Able to deal with pressure of deadlines, frequent interruptions, multiple priorities, responding to emergencies/immediate requests, and working around hazardous conditions
- The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada).
- Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday. (subject to change).
- Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2 , “Personnel Security”. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 , “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709 , “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”

Hourly range for this position is:
$31.02 - $46.53
Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
