Mechanical HVAC Engineer opportunity in
Oak Ridge for the
Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) located at the
Y-12 National Security Complex.
Project Description
This position will provide support to the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) located at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
UPF is a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar project and will be a first-of-its-kind complex for enriched uranium operations in support of Y-12 missions. UPF is one of the Department of Energy’s largest investments in Tennessee since the Manhattan Project and one of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s largest construction projects. When complete, UPF will: replace a 70-year-old facility with modern buildings, reduce operational costs and energy consumption, improve worker safety, and provide enriched uranium capabilities well into the future.
The UPF project works on a 4/10 schedule. Start times are flexible, but the standard work week is: Monday-Thursday from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm.
Job Summary
In this role, you will participate in HVAC design, development, and evaluation of mechanical components and processes by applying applicable HVAC safety, techniques, procedures, and criteria to originate reports, drawings, calculations, and more with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements. You will collaborate and support other engineering disciplines for mechanical matters. Your professional work knowledge and abilities through the application of standard mechanical engineering techniques and criteria will enable you to make impactful contributions to the team.
Major Responsibilities
- Support project needs for design, design review, commissioning, testing, code interpretations, and walk-downs at project locations, as required.
- Apply the principles of HVAC safety in the development of structures, systems, and components.
- Develop and revise Ventilation and Instrumentation Diagrams (V&IDs), formal calculations, etc.
- Support safety analyses and hazards analyses.
- Evaluates, selects, and applies standard mechanical engineering methods, techniques, procedures, and criteria, using independent judgment in making adaptations and modifications.
- Coordinates work and collaborates with other engineering disciplines.
- Provides technical assistance to other mechanical personnel and will interact with project functions, the customer, and regulatory agency personnel in the resolution of complex regulatory issues and industry codes and standards.
- Provides assistance to project and construction management in identifying and complying with project mechanical requirements and in addressing issues as they arise during project execution.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical (or related) Engineering with 2-5 years of progressive professional work experience.
- In lieu of a formal degree, 6 - 9 years of relevant work experience
- Understanding of construction roles, practices, and economics.
- Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards (specifically ASHRAE).
- Knowledge of engineering planning and control methods, including computerized methods.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Proficient in the use of Trane TRACETM 700 and VariTraneTM Duct Designer software.
- Knowledge of FATHOM and Arrow fluid analysis programs.
- US citizenship
- Must be able to obtain a security clearance, as applicable.
