Pay Range
$50.28 - $61.57 Hourly
This is the lowest to highest salary in good faith we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. Pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. Job Description
We have multiple openings for
Mechanical/Electrical Designers to provide design and drafting support for the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences (NIF&PS) Directorate. Successful candidates will develop, analyze, and implement designs of complex systems, collaborating with scientists, engineers, and other technical personnel. Depending on experience and qualifications, candidates may also provide design leadership and management, planning and lead multiple complex projects. These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate.
In this role, you will
- Provide electrical/mechanical design and drafting support at a system level to engineering, scientific, and technical staff utilizing knowledge of Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools using established design parameters and specifications.
- Perform complex calculations to support technical projects using standard engineering formulas.
- Provide supporting documentation for electrical/mechanical design solutions that may include analysis reporting, schedules, costing, processes, and procedures.
- Apply appropriate standards to develop designs and create CAD objects independently under minimal supervision.
- Capture electrical/mechanical design solutions using CAD and maintain documentation in the Windchill/Enterprise Lifecycle Management (ELM) Configuration Management system.
- Contribute to preliminary design concepts for electrical/mechanical hardware, componentry, and systems, including making independent judgment, and decisions and recommendations under moderate technical authority.
- Review completed drawings and other documentation for adherence to LLNL drafting standards and specifications.
- Estimate scheduling and costs to determine effective methods in design, materials and time to meet project deliverables. Prepare and present technical material for design reviews, procedures, and other related documentation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Associate’s degree (AA/AS) or equivalent with applicable experience in Electrical Design/Drafting or Mechanical Design/Drafting or related field.
- Working knowledge developing design concepts with a broad background in its various sub-disciplines – mechanical, optical, electrical, and electro-mechanical.
- Experience within the scope of conception, design, fabrication, and materials, prototyping projects from start to finish.
- Ability to analyze and interpret complex design requirements and exercise creativity and judgment in solving electrical or mechanical design problems.
- Ability to interpret and follow notes, sketches, drawings, specifications, and procedures.
- Effective written and verbal communication, presentation and feedback skills.
- Significant knowledge in Computer Aided Design/Product Lifecycle Management (CAD/PLM) or equivalent Configuration Management system.
- Intermediate knowledge and understanding of the standards, procedures and techniques related to drafting, including knowledge of the ASME Y14.5M Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Standard.
- Significant understanding of electrical or mechanical design principles and ability to solve complex technical problems.
- Significant knowledge of electrical or mechanical hardware design, facility utilities, project walk down, fabrication, assembly techniques, selecting materials, testing processes, and manufacturing methods.
Qualifications We Desire
- Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Extensive experience using PTC Creo Parametric and Windchill.
- Experience using Creo Schematics software.
- Experience with Mentor Graphics PADS/DxDesigner software.
- Experience using GerbTool software.
- Extensive experience using standards, procedures, and techniques related to drafting, including knowledge of the ASME Y14.5M Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Standard.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
