Job Description
The KAPL machinists manufacture test specimens and hardware for various laboratories and programs in the Naval Nuclear Laboratories (NNL). Daily work activities include set up and operation of Mazak milling machines and lathes, Mitsubishi wire and sinker EDM machines as well as other manual and CNC machine tools. Work independently from drawings, sketches and directions to fabricate or modify test specimens or other components to close tolerances. The use of Master-cam and/or Power Mill programs are used to manufacture complex parts. Daily user maintenance of machines and shop cleanliness is standard. Machinists work with engineers and sponsors of jobs and occasionally provide input to engineers and sponsors of typical or improved manufacturing methods. Provide direction and instruction to other machinists as well as collaborate on machining methods.
Duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited, to:
- Read and interpret calipers, micrometers and optical measuring equipment.
- Work from drawings, sketches written and verbal direction.
- Manufacture and fit parts to tolerances as required.
- Devise techniques and fixtures to manufacture and test parts.
- Operate and maintain manual and CNC equipment.
Required Combination Of Knowledge And Skill
- High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of three years machining experience; OR
- Apprenticeship certification with a minimum of two years machining experience

- Master-cam operation experience
- Powermill operation experience
- Mazak lathe and mill experience
- 5 axis machining experience
- Able to work independently and in a team

Pay Range
$37.15 hourly
Jobs categorized as subject to a collective bargaining agreement will adhere to the pay rates, wage increases, progression schedules, and other parameters identified and negotiated in said agreements. Wages and other compensation details are subject to change based negotiated changes to the collective bargaining agreements.
