The Chemistry Associate IV (3-Year Term) will be responsible for synthesis and characterization of ionic liquids (ILs) for studies of their physical chemistry and reaction mechanisms. They will measure the viscosities, conductivities, thermal phase behavior and water content of the ILs and prepare samples for kinetics measurements. They will analyze the resulting data and prepare it for publication.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Synthesize specifically designed ionic liquids for physical chemistry studies
- Characterize ILs using standard analysis techniques (NMR, viscometry, conductimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, Karl Fischer titration and other methods)
- Assist with mentoring undergraduate interns in synthesis and characterization of ILs
- Prepare IL samples for kinetics measurements in coordination with other team members
- Translate experimental results into new scientific knowledge using advanced data analysis techniques
- Assist with preparing manuscripts for publication
- Support collaborations with other IL researchers through the exchange of samples prepared at BNL and performing measurements on samples received at BNL
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field of basic or applied science
- Experience with ionic liquid synthesis and characterization of physical properties
- Experience with experimental data analysis
- Self-motivated and ability to work in a dynamic team environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Masters degree in Chemistry or a related field
- Experience working with undergraduate interns
- Familiarity with glove box usage
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
- Position may require exposure to static magnetic fields
- Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals (NFPA Health Hazard 3
and 4-CMS Report)
Other Information:
- Position will be required to be onsite at BNL
- May be required to work occasional off-hours shift and/or weekend work
